Problems with Glass Run Road Will Keep it Closed During the East Carson Street Closure

"Glass Run Road and East Carson Street will be closed simultaneously." - PennDOT District 11-0 Press Officer James B. Struzzi II

Due to unforeseen issues, a section of Glass Run Road in that will remain closed indefinitely despite a portion of nearby

While neither the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation nor the Pennsylvania American Water Company has issued an official press release about the continued closure of Glass Run, which was supposed to reopen in time for East Carson's closure, a reader forwarded the Baldwin-Whitehall Patch an email that she received from James B. Struzzi II, press officer for PennDOT District 11-0, on Friday.

Struzzi's email to the B-W Patch reader is as follows:

"... Glass Run Road is currently close (sic) due to a collapsed support wall below the roadway. It is believed the weight of equipment used during the water company's work may have caused this. We are working with them to repair and reopen the roadway, however, it doesn't appear this will occur for several more weeks. Which means, unfortunately, Glass Run Road and East Carson Street will be closed simultaneously. The work on East Carson cannot wait any longer due to the risk of more damage occurring in the failed drainage system."

Glass Run was closed on Jan. 10 to install 3,820 linear feet of new, 24-inch water line to replace the 12- to 16-inch water line that was previously installed in that stretch of road, according to Project Manager Scott Hilty of the PAWC. The larger size is expected to improve regular water service, including stronger water flow for firefighting.

In a particularly unfortunate set of circumstances, the posted detour around the Glass Run closure is as follows:

From the east:

  • Take Route 837 (East Carson) west to Becks Run Road.
  • Turn left onto Becks Run and continue to Agnew Road.
  • Turn left onto Agnew and continue to Joseph Street.
  • Turn right onto Joseph and continue to Glass Run.

From the west:

  • Same detour in the opposite direction.

The pending East Carson work, however, which is deemed necessary to repair or replace a damaged culvert, or water tunnel, below East Carson between Becks Run and the Glenwood Bridge, now makes the above detour inaccurate and will cause an additional detour and more delays for drivers.
