Brownsville-Broughton-Curry Hollow Intersection Improvement Slated

Work will begin on Monday, June 20.

The Allegheny County Department of Public Works, in cooperation with the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation District 11-0, will begin an $8.6-million project to improve the large intersection of Brownsville Road, Broughton Road and Curry Hollow Road in , South Park Township and Pleasant Hills Borough on Monday, June 20, weather permitting.

The project includes intersection realignment, reconstruction, widening, bituminous paving, concrete installation, and reconstruction and extension of a concrete arch culvert, as well as improvements to drainage, curbs, sidewalks, traffic signals and more.

Work on Broughton will occur between Brownsville and Park Street, as well as on Brownsville east of Philippe Drive to Thomas Avenue.

Overall work will conclude in spring 2013. The prime contractor is Frank J. Zottola Construction, Inc., of Valencia, PA.

Several traffic restrictions will be necessary beginning at approximately 7 a.m. on June 20 and extending through summer 2012. The following will occur:

  • Brownsville will be reduced to a single, 11-foot-wide lane in each direction between Sixth Street and Philippe.
  • Both lanes on Broughton will be restricted to 11-foot-wide lanes.
  • Eastbound traffic on Brownsville will not be able to make left turns onto Fifth Street or Philippe. The posted detour will be to continue east onto Curry Hollow Road, take the ramp to northbound Route 51, follow Route 51 north to Streets Run Road, make a left and follow Streets Run back to Brownsville.
  • Traffic heading south on Brownsville and Fifth, and east on Philippe, will only be able to make right turns onto Brownsville. Left-turn access to Curry Hollow will be closed. The posted detour from Brownsville will be to take Streets Run to Route 51, make a right and follow Route 51 south to the Curry Hollow off-ramp.

These restrictions will be in place throughout the summer of 2012. Motorists are advised to use caution and expect delays and changing traffic patterns when traveling through the area.
