REMINDER: Broughton/Baptist Intersection Set to Reopen by Nov. 30

Good news for folks in Pittsburgh's South Hills area, as the detours and restrictions that have been in place since March at the Broughton Road-Baptist Road intersection in Bethel Park are scheduled to be removed by Nov. 30, weather permitting.

Crews from the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation District 11-0 are completing temporary traffic signal work needed to reopen that intersection. And in fact, some movements through the intersection may be possible ahead of the full late November reopening.

But the project will not be completely finished until late in 2013, according to a PennDOT news release.

Some utility work may continue through this winter with short-term restrictions at that time, followed by additional long-term, single-direction detours and restrictions lasting from April through next fall.

The $3.9-million project to improve safety and reduce congestion at the intersection will create significant mobility improvements for the traveling public. Work includes reconstructing and widening the intersection to add turning lanes, improved drainage, retaining walls, new traffic signals, curbing and bituminous resurfacing. The prime contractor is Plum Contracting, Inc., of Greensburg.

About 28,000 vehicles use the Broughton-Baptist intersection on an average day, according to PennDOT.
