REMINDER: Broughton/Baptist Intersection Set to Reopen by Nov. 30

But long-term restrictions will resume there in the spring.

Good news for folks in Pittsburgh's South Hills area, as the detours and restrictions that have been in place since March at the Broughton Road-Baptist Road intersection in Bethel Park are scheduled to be removed by Nov. 30, weather permitting.

Crews from the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation District 11-0 are completing temporary traffic signal work needed to reopen that intersection. And in fact, some movements through the intersection may be possible ahead of the full late November reopening.

But the project will not be completely finished until late in 2013, according to a PennDOT news release.

Some utility work may continue through this winter with short-term restrictions at that time, followed by additional long-term, single-direction detours and restrictions lasting from April through next fall.

The $3.9-million project to improve safety and reduce congestion at the intersection will create significant mobility improvements for the traveling public. Work includes reconstructing and widening the intersection to add turning lanes, improved drainage, retaining walls, new traffic signals, curbing and bituminous resurfacing. The prime contractor is Plum Contracting, Inc., of Greensburg.

About 28,000 vehicles use the Broughton-Baptist intersection on an average day, according to PennDOT.

It has'nt been too bad-I'm sure businesses in the area won't agree, but traffic has flowed pretty well. But Monday morning was terrible-sat in traffic for almost 15 min.- cars were turning around-people hitting their horns.........

The various detours have caused loss of time and gas, and it will be great to have the direct route open for a few months, hopefully the delays described won't make the direct route worse than the detours.

bonita I have to agree with you there about the traffic, it flowed pretty well with the construction going on. I travel though here almost daily and can't remember any days that I had to sit more than 5 minutes. I hope when they do the 51/88 intersection it is smooth sailing like at Broughton/Baptist Roads.

delays, no. extra mileage, yes. Of course how much depends on where you are heading and which detour you take.

The fact that 1 lousy intersection in Pennsylvania takes 2 years to "upgrade" is a bad joke. I hope the poor people on Horning enjoy staring at that 30-car backup during rush hour for another YEAR.

Hopefully in the spring the roads will not be snow covered and I will have a winters "Sleigh Ride" back home to Bethel Park for the Holidays. ;)

Billee, in the spring the road will close again to hopefully complete the project. I believe the expected completion date is November of 2013.
