Pittsburgh is a very safe and friendly city. It's one of the things that I love most about the area, and it's one of the first things on which visitors comment. But, like any urban area, we have our share of bad seeds who prey on those they consider to be weak and defenseless.
The most practical self-defense is to stay out of trouble in the first place. Be aware of your surroundings, don't frequent problem areas, and if you're uncomfortable with a certain setting (e.g., an empty parking garage at night), look for a friend or escort to walk with you.
Sometimes, however, despite our best efforts, problems arise. That's when it's important to have some basic physical self-defense skills that allow you to escape and leave the area to obtain help.

Now, obviously I'm not talking about learning how to do a jump spinning kick or becoming a "cage fighter." Those skills are fine for the people who want to pursue them, but they're clearly not for everyone. I'm talking about self-defense techniques that don't require a lot of physical strength or athleticism and that people can easily practice in the comfort of their own home.
Sonny and Lisa Achille of have a series of these techniques that they are posting on YouTube for the benefit of our neighbors. Here's the link to first technique : a basic escape when someone grabs your wrist and tries to drag you away. This technique allows a smaller, weaker person to escape the grasp of a larger attacker and run for help.
