Blind & Vision Rehab Services Coming to Stilley Road

BVRS will offer its low-vision program at Dr. Pallan's office on the Brentwood-Whitehall border.

Blind & Vision Rehabilitation Services of Pittsburgh (BVRS), headquartered in Homestead Borough, is bringing its low-vision program to the office of Dr. Laura Pallan at 4411 Stilley Road on the border of Brentwood and boroughs.

Pallan is a board-certified ophthalmologist who obtained her undergraduate and medical degrees from the University of Pittsburgh. She has been practicing in the Pittsburgh area for the past 16 years, and her area of expertise is cataract surgery and diseases of the eye. Pallan is a member of BVRS' Board of Directors.

BVRS's low-vision program provides services to people who have some usable vision. Trained optometrists perform comprehensive examinations and prescribe optical aids designed to maximize remaining eyesight. An occupational therapist teaches individuals how to use their new optical tools.

Low-vision services also are available at the BVRS Homestead office at 1800 West St., near the Waterfront Shopping Center. Hours of service at that office run from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, from 8 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. on Tuesdays and from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Fridays.

BVRS is a 101-year-old private nonprofit organization that also offers comprehensive and personalized computer instruction for people with vision loss, as well as employment and vocational services, personal adjustment to blindness and deaf blindness training, independence skill building, and in-home instruction.

Whitehall resident Gary G. Vamos, of Oakridge Drive, is BVRS' chief financial officer.

"It's great to see Blind & Vision's services coming to the South Hills," Vamos said. "Residents from , Whitehall, Brentwood, Castle Shannon (Borough), Carrick and many other communities are even closer to some of our services now.

"It's great for people of those areas who need our services, and it's great for us to be able to reach those people now even easier."
