SCHEDULE: Brentwood Borough 2013 Fourth of July Celebration

Tiny Brentwood has a big tradition for Independence Day.

The two-day Independence Day celebration held along Brownsville Road every July might be Brentwood Borough's by name, but it's turned into an overall South Hills highlight over the past several years.

Indeed, tiny Brentwood will see a population boom from July 3-4 as guests and residents from in and around Pittsburgh's southern suburbs will descend on the community of about 9,000 residents.

The festivities are put together annually by Brentwood community leaders and volunteers, and the borough's Fourth of July parade alone draws more than 40,000 spectators each year, with many South Hills expatriates making the trip back home to enjoy it.

Here is this year's schedule:

THURSDAY, JULY 4

9 a.m.:
30TH ANNUAL BRENTWOOD FIRECRACKER 5K RACE (Race begins at Brentwood Towne Square adjacent to Brownsville. It also ends there. Here is a course map.)

You can click here to register online for the race. There are awards for top finishers by category, and other prizes are available, as well.

Have questions about the cost to register and registration deadlines? Click here.

Race organizers, who rely heavily on volunteers, are still looking for people to help out with this year's race. A fluid station at Kezmoh's gas station is one example of a place where help is needed. The same goes for various positions at Brentwood Towne Square. Email info@brentwood5k.com if you're interested.

10 a.m.:
FLYOVER (Donated by area military veterans.)

10 a.m.:
PARADE [Route (about 1.6 miles): Starts at the intersection of Brownsville and Sankey Avenue and proceeds south on Brownsville toward Brentwood Towne Square, where it ends.]

The theme of the parade this year, in honor of military veterans, is "Honoring Our Hometown Heroes." This year's grand marshal is Brentwood's Robert "Butch" Burke, a Vietnam War veteran and a Jefferson Awards recipient for outstanding community volunteerism.

The parade will also feature many military veteran units; representatives of the Pennsylvania National Guard9th Pennsylvania ReservesBrentwood High School SPARTAN Marching BandBaldwin High School Highlander Marching Band; Baldwin-Whitehall Patch; several Syria Shriners groups; Steel City Angels, Pittsburgh Fire Fighters Memorial Pipe Band; numerous Scouts units; Brentwood Presbyterian Food Bank; local fire departments; local elected officials; and many others.

4 p.m.:
RAFFLE TICKET DRAWING at municipal building

9:40 p.m.
FIREWORKS DISPLAY: The fireworks will be set off at the upper ball field near Radisson Street and Dailey Road. "Since that is one of the highest elevations in Brentwood Borough, most people in the area (as well as many areas of Baldwin and Whitehall) will be able to see the fireworks," said John Frombach, chair of the Brentwood 4th of July Committee. Although Brentwood Stadium is closed due to construction, the stadium's parking area is still accessible. Because of the narrow streets, the area around the ball field and its adjoining streets will be restricted prior to and during the fireworks.

The rain date for the fireworks is Friday, July 5
.

WEDNESDAY, JULY 3

6-9:30 p.m.:
BRENTWOOD STREET FAIR (Along Brownsville from the Brentwood Library to the Brentwood Presbyterian Church, sponsored by the Brentwood Business Owners Association)

The street fair includes food booths; other vendors; music; activities for children at the library; and a local firefighters' "Battle of the Barrel" at the Brentwood Municipal Building at 6:30 p.m.

Also, at 8 p.m., the band Alter Ego will perform at the municipal building, and at 9 p.m., the winners of a local house decorating contest will be announced. Houses will be judged on July 1. Click here for a registration form.
