Whitehall's Sisters of St. Francis Offering Counseling Services

Sister Nancy Langhart is the expert.

Responding to the needs of Pittsburgh and its surrounding communities, the , who have , are now offering counseling services as one of their on-campus ministries.

Sister Nancy Langhart specializes in relationships and personality assessment and has over 30 years of experience as a counselor. Langhart recently returned to the Pittsburgh area from Albany, NY, where she spent over 27 years counseling students, faculty and staff for several colleges. She also counseled couples for various issues ranging from marriage preparation to conflict resolution. 

Langhart holds a master's degree in counseling from Duquesne University. She also received a certification from Hartwick College to administer and interpret the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator, which identifies a person's personality type and characteristics. This tool, which is beneficial to individuals and couples, allows a test-taker to examine how he or she relates to others, reveals sources of conflict and provides insights about feelings and actions.

"Myers-Briggs is good for couples as well as individuals," Langhart said. "It lets you see how you function differently and understand why there may be conflict.

"For example, an extrovert needs to talk to think. An introvert needs to think to talk. There are differences in how each (person) communicates, and a step to solving an issue is to recognize how one acts or reacts."

Langhart has been a member of the Sisters of St. Francis of the Providence of God for over 50 years. Because she believes that mental health and spiritual health are closely connected, spiritual direction and prayer are offered as optional services to clients. 

Langhart is available for daytime as well as limited evening and weekend sessions. Appointments are held in a private room at the Sisters of St. Francis of the Providence of God Motherhouse at 3603 McRoberts Road in Whitehall.

Sessions cost $40 each. Reduced prices are available for those who cannot afford the full $40.

Langhart also does presentations to group and organizations on mental health issues, relationships, mindfulness and spiritual topics. To schedule an appointment, or for more information, please call 412-882-9911.

Founded in 1922, the Sisters of St. Francis of the Providence of God serve the Pittsburgh region as well as other parts of the United States, Brazil, Lithuania and Bolivia. The Sisters' ministries and outreach efforts include prayer, education, advocacy, spiritual direction, parish services, health care and other services shaped by the needs of others.
