In the mid-1950s, firefighters from three stations—Brentwood Volunteer Fire Company, and —were called to duty to put out a fire at this abandoned coal tipple in .

The firefighters used small sprays of water drawn from a nearby stream but were unable to stop the burning. The four-bin tipple soon became a charred skeleton.
