Public Hearing on Transit Cuts This Thursday

State Reps. Matt Smith and Dan Deasy will chair a public hearing in Green Tree to discuss public transit cuts.

The Pennsylvania House Democratic Policy Committee will hold a public hearing on Thursday, May 3, at 10 a.m. to discuss the economic impact of public transit cuts. State Reps. Daniel Deasy and Matthew H. Smith, both Democrats from Allegheny County, will co-chair the hearing.

"We have heard from many constituents on how the proposed cuts to the Port Authority will impact them," Smith said, "but the outcry from area businesses has greatly increased in recent months. They are being hit from both sides with reduced accessibility for customers and employees."

Look below for a list of service changes starting Sept. 2 that would affect riders in and around Baldwin-Whitehall.

"In order for continued regional economic growth to occur, we must ensure that we have an effective and broad-reaching public transit system," Deasy said. "Hearing from local businesses and experts on how we address our mass transit crisis will be invaluable as we move forward on this crucial issue."

Allegheny County Executive Rich Fitzgerald and officials from Green Tree Borough, Port Authority, the Amalgamated Transit Union, area nonprofit organizations and numerous area businesses and other properties are scheduled to testify during Thursday's hearing.

The public hearing will be start at 10 a.m. in the council chambers of the Green Tree Municipal Center at 10 W. Manilla Ave., Pittsburgh, PA 15220.

Everyone takes concessions for their jobs except for Port Authority Drivers. They are like those that are in the House, Senate, Congress. Great Pensions, Medical paid for life and the best of the best of policies.
Port Authority doesn't need to cut service, they need to start cutting pays for drivers. Management took a 20 percent pay cut, it is time the drivers do too.

I think they need to look at the way Port Authority is run. I think they waste a ton of money and if it were privatized it would be a profitable business. Some of these buses get so packed, they have to stop allowing people onto the bus. This round of cuts is going to become a nightmare for those of us who work in town. Not only for those that ride the bus, as each person who starts driving instead puts one more car on the road. Traffic.

How do they expect people in this city to get to work? The Spencer/Churchview was packed each way, every day and they cut that route because they said it wasn't busy enough. This is a time when we are encouraged to be "greener". Port Authority does not make it easy.

I agree there Christina with you, it needs to be privatized. Years ago I use to enjoy riding a bus to work, it was relaxing to be able to read the paper or a book. But they cut the buses that I took so my only option was to drive. One thing fortunate about my place of employment is that when bus service was cut, people were given the option of working from home as many people weren't able to get to work anymore unless they walked 3 miles beyond the closest bus stop.

Just like education.com has all the correct information about how much schools pay for each student to attend school. Go to the Federal website and see what perks everyone in Congress, House and Senate gets.
Go check out their medical benefits and compare them to obamacare. Why don't you come see the new 2012 Bentley that my neighbor just purchased on a bus drivers salary. This was added to the BMW and Escalade that him and his wife have. Nice when your 38, have a paid off home and wife works part time at CVS and this is all done on a bus drivers salary. BTW, I'm not jealous but he loves to brag about everything he got for perks he has for being a bus driver.

How about extra atomic hot sauce on their chicken wings instead!
My fact finder referenced the book of Luke 18:22. This is an entitlement of free will and not contractual the choice is yours. However it is final!!! Don't forget to read the fine print DAILY!!!

People should boycott Port Authority for one day and see how much they depend on the public.
