Patch Picks: Alumni Making Headlines

The B-W Patch gives you another best-of list in a weekly feature.

The Baldwin-Whitehall Patch presents its weekly Patch Picks feature, highlighting editor and reader picks of great local businesses, destinations, services, organizations, ways to spend a day off and more.

Here is this week's list, calling out former students who are making big news in the world these days:

  •  (Pinkston played football at Baldwin High and the University of Pittsburgh before being selected by the Cleveland Browns in the NFL Draft on April 30. He graduated from Baldwin in 2006.)
  • Charles A. Graner Jr. (The death of Osama bin Laden has turned many readers' attention to conflict in the Middle East once again. Doing so may remind some folks of Graner, who made news for the wrong reasons by being found guilty in 2005 of nine counts of abuse of prisoners at the Abu Ghraib prison. Graner graduated from Baldwin in 1986.)
  •  [Though he left Baldwin after his sophomore year (2008-09) to pursue an ice-hockey career in Michigan, Gibson has made Baldwin-Whitehall proud by helping Team USA win a gold medal at the 2011 world under-18 championships. Gibson is considered by NHL Central Scouting to be the highest-ranking North American goalkeeper for the upcoming 2011 NHL Draft. He will return to Baldwin High to play in a on May 24.]
  •  (Wannstedt always gets a mention on lists like these. And deservedly so. "Wanny" has won two NCAA football titles and two Super Bowls as an assistant coach. After resigning as the head football coach at the University of Pittsburgh, where he coached Pinkston, in 2010, Wannstedt landed with the Buffalo Bills. He is now the Bills' inside linebackers coach and assistant head coach. He graduate from Baldwin in 1970.)
  • Orrin Hatch (The senior U.S. senator for Utah and a 1952 Baldwin grad, Hatch has made major news for his controversial defense of polygamy. Hatch was once a candidate for the Republican nomination to be the president of the United States.)
