Patch Picks: 2010-11 School Year Sports Highlights

The B-W Patch gives you another best-of list in a weekly feature.

The Baldwin-Whitehall Patch presents its weekly Patch Picks feature, highlighting editor and reader picks of great local businesses, destinations, services, organizations, ways to spend a day off and more.

With Baldwin-Whitehall's public and private schools closing for the summer, the timing is right for this week's Patch Picks: five great moments from our area's interscholastic sports scene in 2010-11 (in no particular order):

  • varsity girls basketball wins at Mount Lebanon High School, 48-46, on Jan. 3. (Yes, it was just a regular-season game, but the Highlanders handing Mount Lebanon a rare home loss meant a lot to them and the Baldwin High program after the Blue Devils beat Baldwin four times the season before, including twice in the playoffs. Mount Lebanon went on to win its third straight state championship in 2010-11.)
  •  (Not only that, but the on their way to the state crown.)
  • (Honorable mention: as well.)
  • The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette selects BHS girls basketball player Belma Nurkic to its 2010-11 Fabulous Five team. (The Post-Gazette considers players from every WPIAL and City League school for its annual Fab Five squad.)
  • (Pinkston played for fellow Baldwin alum Dave Wannstedt '70 at the University of Pittsburgh from 2006 to 2010 while Wannstedt was Pitt's head football coach.)

The Baldwin-Whitehall Patch launched on Dec. 30, 2010, so we were partial to winter and spring news this school year. Please don't take it personally, and check back each week for more Patch Picks!
