Momsday: The Great Escape

9/11 remembrance, community-wide garage sale, Tai Chi and soup takeout.

Hello, moms! Did you enjoy your three-day weekend? It was a little bit soggy for the holiday but still a day off to enjoy with family instead of working!

I hope that you took some time to unwind from your usual busy schedules. Summer is too short in Baldwin-Whitehall, so make sure to enjoy it while it lasts!

This coming weekend marks the 10th anniversary of a very important event in U.S. history. It is the anniversary of 9/11. Do you remember what you were doing that day? I was off of work that day, and my mother-in-law called me to turn on the television. The first plane had just crashed, and it was all over the news. I sat watching the horrifically surreal events unfold during the rest of that day. It is a day that I, along with all other Americans, will likely never forget.

My children were not born yet, but it is a very important event that they have learned about. This Sunday, Sept. 11, there will be a 10-year commemoration/remembrance ceremony at 's at 8:30 a.m. This is a great way for the community to come together to remember this important day in history and a great event to involve your children in to help educate them of the events that unfolded that tragic day.

On a much lighter note, is having a community-wide garage sale on Saturday, Sept. 10, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. I've already heard of one multi-family event on Rose Lane, and I'm sure that there will be many others joining in. What a great way to go catch some deals all in one local area!

So grab the hubby and get out in Baldwin Township this weekend. Let me know what great treasures you find! This is the perfect time of the year to find deals with everyone needing to clean out their garages and basements to store their summer furniture away. Plus, this is another great way for a community to bring everyone out of their homes for a day to talk to their friends and neighbors!

If you're looking for a great class to take with a friend to learn something relaxing and good for your body and mind, then look no further, moms! on McRoberts Road in Whitehall is holding an Intro to Tai Chi series of classes. The classes will run from Tuesday, Sept. 13, to Tuesday, Oct. 18, from 6 to 7 p.m. The cost is only $30 per person. You can call 412-881-9207 to register.

A certified Tai Chi instructor is teaching the classes. What a great way to spend an hour per week for yourself, moms! And it is so close to home that you won't have to feel guilty running away from the family for an hour. Go grab some "momscape."

And last, but not least, you will want to mark this on your calendars: Next Wednesday, Sept. 14, Sisters of St Francis is holding a Sisters Soup Take Out. It is from 3 to 6 p.m., and the sisters are going to be cooking up homemade wedding, chicken noodle and broccoli soup for you to take home for dinner!

The soup is only $5 per quart, and each quart comes with two dinner rolls. No need to cook dinner that day, moms! The sisters will also have their crafts shop open during that time in case you are looking for a nice present for a friend or maybe something cute to add to your own home.

All proceeds will benefit Sisters of St. Francis, so not only do you not have to cook dinner that day, but it's for a good cause. It's already on my calendar! Soup is good for the soul, and homemade soup is even better.

I hope that you have a great week, moms! Take time to remember 9/11, and teach your children about the importance of the date. Go treasure hunting with the hubby, grab a friend and learn Tai Chi, and then, get some homemade soup for dinner.

But most important, grab some time for just you! We all need some.

Thanks for reading.
