Momsday: The Great Escape

Whitehall Borough Community Day is this Saturday.

Hello, moms! Are you enjoying the last remaining days of summer vacation before the kiddos go back to school? Did you get all the back-to-school shopping done?

If you're trying to squeeze in all of the last-minute fun that you can this week, you'll want to know that this Saturday, Aug. 27, is 's 21st annual 5,000-meter race, 1-mile fun walk and Community Day celebration! The theme this year is "."

The festivities start at 8 a.m. at with registration for the race and the walk, and the fun lasts until 5 p.m. There will be activities all day long at both the (next to the Whitehall Municipal Swimming Pool) and Snyder Park (just down the road from there).

There will be bands and dancing, including a performance by the marching band. The event's Children's Center will feature a mechanical bull, a rodeo playground, pony rides and much, much more.

Free parking and shuttle bus service is available all day long. There will also be food booths, raffles, prize giveaways and informational vendors. I hear that one of the great booths at this year's Community Day will be none other than the Baldwin-Whitehall Patch's. That's right; Patch will be present and accounted for at the festivities.

Make sure to stop by and say "hello" to , the editor of this GREAT website and a great boss (if I may say so myself)! Bob would be really happy if you stopped by the booth to meet him, and he can tell you all about the Baldwin-Whitehall Patch, what we are all about and how we are dedicated to bringing you the best news and stories in Baldwin-Whitehall.

Community Day is a day of fun for you, your family, your friends and the whole community. You will not want to miss it. This is a great way to end the summer!

For more information, check out the event flier near the top of this page. I hope to see you there!

OK, so the kids are going back to school. No more cleaning up messes all day or grocery shopping until your bank account is empty. No more hanging poolside all day long and breaking up fights amongst the kids.

Wait, this means more "mom's time," right? So what do you do with all of your time? Why not go back to school as well? There is still time to register for the fall semester, and most colleges now offer online courses if you don't want to leave home to go back to school.

If you're not looking for something career-minded, you could always take a fun, non-credit course. Community College of Allegheny County offers numerous non-credit courses, and many of those are held right at Baldwin High. CCAC has everything from arts and crafts to writing in its list of offerings.

There really is something offered for anyone with any interest. So do something for yourself and go back and get that degree that you have been meaning to get all of these years. Or, grab a friend and take a great non-credit class on holiday baking or gardening. Whatever you choose, why not do something for yourself with all of the newfound free time that you have? Back-to-school for moms!

And I don't want to hear any excuses regarding age or, "It's too late to go back." It is never too late to learn something new! And you really will feel good about yourself!

So let's get back to school, kids and moms!

Don't forget, on Monday, Aug. 29, after you put the kids on the bus, to go grab breakfast with your friends to celebrate back-to-school and grab some "mom's time." I know that I will be! You'll be able to hear a lot of sighs of relief from a lot of moms in Baldwin-Whitehall that morning!

Have a great week, moms, and thanks for reading!
