Momsday: The Great Escape

Hello, moms! Getting lots of use out of those umbrellas lately? I thought it was supposed to be April showers?

But, to look at it from the bright side, all of this rain is great for the flowers that everyone has been planting around Baldwin-Whitehall. I planted mine last week in between the raindrops, and they are just soaking up all of this water and looking beautiful.

Won’t it be nice when the rain comes to an end and you can take a walk through your neighborhoods to enjoy all of the lovely foliage? That sweet smell of honeysuckle vines just blooming away in the sun ... Ahhh!

In between the raindrops this week again, I found some things for you to do in Baldwin-Whitehall with your spouse and friends.

Here are some of the great happenings in our area this week to go out and enjoy:

Friday night, we have bands on both ends of . The group Ruff House is at  that night. Ruff House is a rock ’n blues band, and you can see them for a $5 cover charge on Friday, starting at 9 p.m.

Over on the northern end of Baldwin at the , you can catch rock musician Matt Tichon at 9:30 p.m. The cover charge is $5 there as well.

If you’re into karaoke, ’s will be acting as one of the competition sites for the 2011 USA Karaoke Championships on Friday. This is a big event, and thousands of singers from across the United States are competing for a chance to represent our county at the international karaoke competition in Killarney, Ireland, in September. Six female singers and six male singers will compete during each evening of the competition. Visit www.kwcusa.net for more details.

Here is something a little different but a whole lot of fun! On Saturday at around 2 p.m., the Getaway Cafe is hosting a cornhole tournament. I know some serious cornhole competitors that live in Baldwin-Whitehall who are going to want to head to this event. Sign-ups are at noon on Saturday.

Each team in the cornhole tournament will consist of two people. There will be practice time for everyone that signs up prior to 1 p.m., and the Getaway will award gift cards to the top three teams.

The Getaway will hold cornhole tournaments every third Saturday of each summer month with a final contest set for October 15, so head over to the Getaway to watch (or play in) some serious cornhole competition in Baldwin-Whitehall. I bet that it’ll be a blast!

For all of you Facebook users, in North Baldwin is holding a Facebook customer appreciation night on Tuesday, May 24. Head over to Michael’s Facebook page and “like” them if you have not done so already. Then, go to Michael’s to enjoy appetizer specials and buy-one-get-one-free drink specials from 6:30 to 9 on Tuesday night.

And don’t forget that the book sale is going on all of this week. Proceeds will benefit Baldwin’s new library fund. I checked it out myself already, and they have tons of great books for sale. You can buy a whole bag of books for only $5. That can make for a lot of reading on your comfy couch for some time alone!
