Baldwin Township once included present-day Carrick, Brentwood, Whitehall, Castle Shannon, Hays, Overbrook and Baldwin Borough.
"Historians believe that, if Baldwin Township had never been divided, it would now be the second-largest community in Allegheny County, with a population of over 100,000," according to text published on baldwintownship.com, that municipal government's online home.
The website—revamped in the late summer of 2012—has a lot to offer, including a detailed history section that shows an old map of once-huge Baldwin Township and an excerpt from an 1821 work by Thomas Cushing—History of Allegheny county, Pennsylvania including its early settlement and progress to the present time ; a description of its historic and interesting localities ; its cities, towns and villages; religious, educational, social and military history ; mining, manufacturing and commercial interests, improvements, resources, statistics, etc. ; also, biographies of many of its representative citizens.
