Baldwin Boro Manager Barrett on Recycling Changes

Adjustments to 2012 pickup schedule caught some residents by surprise.

Some residents were caught off-guard recently by the municipality's change in recycling collection days for some streets.

The borough announced the changes for 2012 in late 2011 through , including its own website, but not every affected resident noticed the announcements, causing some dwellers to be left with an overflow of recyclable trash after the winter holiday season.

One Baldwin resident on Elmwood Drive, for example, said that she was forced to throw some recyclables away with regular garbage so as to avoid a pileup of trash.

Furthering the confusion for many residents was a typo printed in the November 2011 issue of IN Brentwood-Baldwin-Whitehall magazine, a publication that is sent to area residences, that listed incorrect pickup days for Walton Road, Schieck Street, Gensler Road, Brallier Court, Goucher Drive and Glass Run Road.

Recycling pickup for those streets is scheduled for FRIDAYS in 2012 instead of for Thursdays as listed incorrectly in the magazine and on a PDF available on the borough's website.

"The recycling schedule was (originally) altered at the direction of the hauler, Waste Management," Baldwin Borough Manager John Barrett said on Wednesday. "We advertised the change. Needless to say, a good number of residents did not get this message, and we were flooded with complaints.

"In response to the complaints, the borough contacted Waste Management and requested additional sweeps of the borough before the holiday to ensure that recyclables were not left on the street.

"Waste Management complied and ended up making several additional sweeps of the borough to pick up recyclables. They also went door-to-door and gave residents notice of the change to the recycling pickup schedule."
