B-W Trivia: What Was the Name of This Store?

We will reveal the answer on Monday.

The Baldwin Historical Society brings you another trivia question that delves into our area's colorful past.

Pat Lombardi and Patty Woehler, co-presidents of the society, generously write the questions and provide the pictures.

Here is this week's question (actually, questions):

This store opened in 1947. It was a grocery and meat market and had fresh produce and a deli.

It was a landmark in Baldwin and was owned by a well-known family in the area.

The building is still standing and is now home to a different business.

What was the name of this store, and where was it located?

(Bonus question: What store is there now?)

Read other Baldwin-Whitehall Trivia Time questions here.

And find out more about the Baldwin Historical Society, which is always looking for new members to collect and research the history of the areaHERE!

McGinnis was the store and now it is Partyline
Joyce Webber-Olszewski March 9, 2013 at 09:00 pm
Yes it is now Partyline Catering, it used to be McGinnis' when the father Elwood and mother Roseala still ran it. That was before the sisters and brothers opened their own stores. The entire family worked at this location.
Debbie Zakowski March 9, 2013 at 09:20 pm
McGinnis' when the parents owned and operated it. Loved it then, love it now at the Sister's location.
Karen March 9, 2013 at 09:40 pm
You are correct... Used to walk home from St. Wendelin every week day.
Margaret French March 10, 2013 at 12:47 am
Just so everyone knows... when I wrote my two replies there weren't any here yet. The way it appears here I appear stupid. They had all accumulated and Bob still had to approve the replies.
Ken March 10, 2013 at 04:11 pm
You did not know so what
Robert Edward Healy, III (Editor) March 10, 2013 at 04:29 pm
Hey, these are all guesses! I haven't revealed the answer yet. :)
Jennifer March 10, 2013 at 04:40 pm
my grandfather opened in 1946. At the time it was McGinnis Country Deli. The sisters grew the original business that became McGinnis Sisters in the 70's and is now on Rt51.
NE12Ukid March 10, 2013 at 10:49 pm
Nice to see more background information on the location! I knew it as McGinnis Sisters.
Would like to see more background information on these each week, as the correct answer is revealed, of course. :-)

This store actually opened across from the bar and next to the gas station in 1957 or 1958. (The first store, was across the street and opened on Christmas eve in 1946.) My grandmother acquired the property at sheriff's sale. This was was built with the help of a neighbor ,George Dresher, who was a Baldwin contractor from behind St. Wendelin's church. Mr. Dresher asked my dad how much the building would cost to build and my dad said "about $30,000." Mr. Dresher said, "How much do you need?" and my dad said, "about $30,000."" Mr. Dresher then went ahead and loaned my parents the money to build it when the banks would not give my dad a dime. My dad was so proud of this building and how solidly it was built.

it's McGinnis Food Center. The original store was across the street and opened on December 23, 1946. The store pictured opened around 1958-59.

Noreen this is an awesome story.
Robert Edward Healy, III (Editor) March 12, 2013 at 12:37 am
Alright, so it wasn't a very well-kept secret. Yes, the answer is McGinnis Sisters Special Food Stores on Custer Avenue in north Baldwin. Partyline Catering Deli & Bakery is at that spot now.
NE12Ukid March 12, 2013 at 02:51 am
Yeah, I won!

Margaret French March 12, 2013 at 04:24 am
Technically NE, you are only 2/3 right, just as I am. You failed to name the street, whereas I failed to name what is there now. Have a lovely sweet Tusday!
NE12Ukid March 12, 2013 at 04:57 am
Especially when we don't get hung up on technicalities! :-)

Noreen just added a great picture. Thanks, Noreen! Who is that handsome man, and what year is it from?
Pat Lombardi March 17, 2013 at 12:04 am
Hi Noreen,
The historical society would appreciate and information and pictures you could give us. Any pictures we would copy and return to you. Thanks, Pat Lombardi
Noreen McGinnis Campbell March 17, 2013 at 12:42 am
That is my Dad, Elwood McGinnis. I think it would be about early to mid - 70's. My brother Pat, (Baldwin '72) is a spitting image of him now.
