Six Gene Kelly Nominations for Baldwin High School

The school has an opportunity to defend its Best Musical title.

Baldwin High School has an opportunity to defend the Gene Kelly Awards' Best Musical title, earning six nominations in 13 possible Kelly categories this year, including that one as well as Best Actress and Best Supporting Actor. Maggie Brooks, who impressed as "Tracy Turnblad" in "Hairspray," is Baldwin's shot at Best Actress. Brooks was a nominee in the same category in 2011 but did not come away with the hardware. Brooks was also nominated for the Best Supporting Actress award in 2012, helping Baldwin earn the Best Musical award that year. Meanwhile, Greg Arcuri is Baldwin's hope for Best Supporting Actor in 2013 for, oddly enough, his gender-bending portrayal of Tracy's mother "Edna Turnblad." The other acting nomination for Baldwin …

Have You Seen it Yet? Pittsburgh: The Movie

A local man compiled clips from 29 films shot in Pittsburgh and turned them into a music video that has gone viral.

From The Silence of the Lambs to The Dark Knight Rises to Jack Reacher, Pittsburgh has been the backdrop to more than two-dozen Hollywood films. Mt. Lebanon native Aron Zelkonwicz, who grew up watching many of those films, decided to take it one step further by gathering iconic scenes from 29 films shot in Pittsburgh and compiling them into a music video. "I thought it would be fun," Zelkonwicz told KDKA's John Shumway. "I had seen all these movies filmed in Pittsburgh and thought, 'Why not take the parts everyone wants to see, the shots of Pittsburgh, and put those together?'" His labor of love took weeks, in between rehearsals and performances with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, where he plays the cello. The music is a piece from the…

THEN AND NOW: Highlanders Sing 'The Hundred Pipers' for Dr. Shalley

Shalley, Baldwin High's former choral director, died on March 6.

Former Baldwin High School singers said goodbye to longtime choral director Dr. Regis V. Shalley last month the best way that they could, belting out a rendition of "The Hundred Pipers" during Dr. Shalley's funeral Mass at Saint Elizabeth of Hungary Roman Catholic Church in Baldwin Borough. The alumni gathered to sing at the conclusion of the Mass for Shalley, who was Baldwin High's choral director from 1954 to 1981 and died on March 6 at the age of 88. Current Baldwin choral director Kris Tranter oversaw the alumni performance. Along with "The Hundred Pipers"—fitting given Baldwin's mascot, the Highlander—the alumni performed "The Lord Bless You and Keep You," as well. ("The Hundred Pipers" is also known as "Wi' a Hundred Pipers/Annie …

Shovlin Dancers Place Ninth at World Championship

Dancers from Shovlin Academy of Irish Dance competed March 29 in the 2013 World Irish Dance Championship.

Dancers from Shovlin Academy of Irish Dance took their talents from a studio in Dormont Municipal Center to the world stage last weekend. The troupe performed at the 2013 World Irish Dance Championship in Boston, and placed ninth out of 13 groups. Instructor Sheila Shovlin created and choreographed the narrative drama the troupe performed—a unique performance, considering that many competitors at the Championship perform solo, rather than in a group. Shovlin's sister, instructor Liz Shovlin Grinko, said considering the level of competition the troupe was up against, ninth place is not bad at all. "They were very happy with that," she said. "We were competing with dancers from higher brackets who were there for solos as well, so you had …
