WPIAL Football Realigns for 2012

Baldwin joins Bethel Park, Canon-McMillan, Mt. Lebanon, Penn Hills, Peters Township, Plum, Upper St. Clair and Woodland Hills in new section.

The WPIAL Board of Control has realigned its football conferences in time for the 2012 season. The realignment will last for at least two years.

WPXI is reporting that the high school sports governing body's AAAA and AAA football classifications will both move from four conferences to three and that its AA and A classes will both maintain four conferences.

Baldwin High School, which competes in Class AAAA, leaves the now-defunct six-team Great Southern Conference, which also included Upper St. Clair, Mt. Lebanon, Bethel Park, Peters Township and Canon-McMillan high schools in 2011, and moves to the nine-team AAAA Section 2, which includes Penn Hills, Plum and Woodland Hills high schools in addition to the six Great Southern teams.

The top five teams in each AAAA section will qualify for the postseason, as well as the best sixth-place team out of all three sections.
