What Is the Most Important Issue in the Presidential Election?
This campaign is full of issues but, in the end, which is most important to you?
Pittsburgh was a political hot spot on Friday when President Barack Obama, a Democrat, and two Republican vice-presidential hopefuls, former Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty and Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal, came to town to discuss their platforms with supporters.
Obama's speech centered on economic recovery, education, health care, student loan interest rates and the middle class.
Pawlenty and Jindal, hoping to drum up support for Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney, focused their talks on job creation, energy regulation, taxes, health care and federal spending.
Take our poll and let us know which of these issues is the most important to you or most likely to influence your vote. Tell us why this issue is important to you in the comments section below.

What's at stake cannot be so simply categorized. This nation needs systemic reform that returns government into the hands of people and out of the entrenched control of mega-rich corporations that TODAY own the politicians, own the media, own the computers that count the votes and own the military-industrial complex that is waging war for profit and profit alone. We are not free.

obama never held a real job. his community advisor or whatever it was clearly did not work as the area is still a drug ridden slum. he wasted tax money on such things as the solar company and now there is the battery place thats going under. his first two years had a dem house and senate and still got nothing done. the healthcare bill is a joke and needs reworked as it was rushed and no one even read it before voting on it. chrysler and gm got a bail out and still making junk. i have two chrysler cars and will never ever buy another one. with the first fours years gone now he wants to work on infrastruture? now because it is ok to be gay obama is now all for gay marriage? flip flop.

Jim Mang has left an extremely relevant point concerning Obama or shall we call him Barry Sortero. I have read quite a bit about Obama. Please read the book of Ed Klein "The Amatuer", you may be surprised at some of the revelations. In the book, the Rev. Wright has stated on a recording as he was being interviewed, that Baraq and his wife are phoneys. He will have a book coming out after the election, a tell all. He has stated that Baraq and his wife were never really religious. They just wanted to drum up some political connections. Even Hillary Clinton was advised to run against him during this particular election cycle as Baraq IS A failure at his job. I have read the book "Fool me Twice" by Aaron Klein. This book is all about Obama and his plans for OUR future. Be very afraid as the change in this Country should not shock those on the left but if you are not ready for extremist measures, be prepared. Also, see the movie "2016". I have found it very revealing about Obama's mindset since we know very little about him. There are many things that make him a socialist out to ruin this Country. Just look at all of the scandal concerning Libya and the lies that he has told. Look at "Fast and Furious". Even the Hispanic network Telemundo had questions that Obama will NEVER answer. Look at all of the scandals for money appropriated for green energy and Solyndra and all of the other green energy companies that have gone belly up. Read the truth!!!

jim mang have to agree with you and there is more that he has not done to help the PEOPLE OF THE UNITED STATES. All obama does is waste tax payers money with nothing to show. On the news tonight says Romney is winning now the Election, which I hope stays that way. On one of the news stations said the Vice President Debate will be the factor in who gets elected President. All Ryan is going to have to do is sit back and watch biden put his foot in his mouth with all his rambling.

Are you referring to Romey's time at Bain Capital. Of course you are. A company that used investors' money to buy troubled companies in order to save them. And in the process laid off workers. Is that what you want people to see. Well, no, I guess not. You just want everyone to know that Romney made lots of money raiding companies, forgetting that Bain saved the vast majority of companies they bought, and in the process saved jobs.
Well Cathy, let me take a moment to educate you on the fact that this is exactly what Obama did with GM and countless other TAX PAYER funded bailouts. The big difference is that Romney used private money and Obama used tax payer money. So, if I have to choose between the two, I'll go with Romney.
Here are some articles you can read at your leisure . . if you dare.

Isabella, So lets see Romney has:
-Bullied a gay student when he was younger, cutting off his hair.
-Tied a family pet to the roof of a car.
-Outsourced thousands of American jobs.
-Protested in support of the Vietnam War even though he avoided service by taking a missionary trip to France.
-Made a $10k bet on national TV
-Passed Romneycare now plans to repeal Obamacare..which is the exact same bill.
-Thinks people should only get the education they can afford.
-Is putting an elevator for cars in his house.
-Had his money hidden in offshore accounts.
-Paid a less percentage of taxes than the average middle class American.
To just name a few...
And NOW he's been busted for investing in a company that profited from the disposal of aborted fetus's and animal remains that died from medical testing.
You just can't make this kind of crap up.Bain Capital is only a tiny bit of what is corrupt about Mitt Romney.

We got a president that can't even give a whole 1% of his money a year to charities yet he makes over a million a year. This president has spent more on vacations then anyone in the last 20 years. Well Cathy, let's address your rebuttals one at a time.
-Bullied a gay student when he was younger, cutting off his hair.**So did Obama. He bullied a girl, talks about it in his book. The difference, Romney apologized, Obama didn't.
-Tied a family pet to the roof of a car.**Obama ate dog.Talks about it in his book. The difference, Romney's dog got a vacation and Obama's dog, well he ate it.
-Outsourced thousands of American jobs. **So did Obama by creating such a horrific environment for businesses, many have had to ship jobs overseas to stay competative. My employer moved hundreds of jobs to India in the last 2 years.
-Protested in support of the Vietnam War even though he avoided service by taking a missionary trip to France.**Romney signed up for the draft and drew a number in December 1970, just like thousands of other young men.Because he drew a high number, he never had to serve.
-Made a $10k bet on national TV**So what. It's his money. Obama bet Billions of taxpayer funds we will never get back. Raser Technologies 33MIL, ECOtality $126.2 MIL, NGP 98.5miL, First Solar 3 BILLION, Abound Solar 400MIL, Beacon Power 43 MIL. and there's more. Take a look: http://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/forget-bain-obamas-public-equity-record-is-the-real-scandal/2012/05/24/gJQAXnXCnU_story.html
-Passed Romneycare now plans to repeal Obamacare..which is the exact same bill.** One is a State Bill and the other is Federal. Gigantic difference.
Isabella Valentine
8:50 pm on Monday, July 9, 2012
Let's continue . . .
-Thinks people should only get the education they can afford.**I agree, it's called living within your means. I'm tired of footing the bill for those that choose to live outside their means. There are many ways to get an education you can afford.
-Is putting an elevator for cars in his house.**It's his money, he can spend it how he likes.Unlike Obama who likes to spend taxpayer money. Me, I don't think I would go for a car elevator. I would build a cat sanctuary. Yea, that's right, a cat sanctuary.
-Had his money hidden in offshore accounts.**Well Cathy, if you know about it, you really can't call it 'hidden' now can you. I have money hidden in my sock drawer. Ooops, don't tell anyone.
-Paid a less percentage of taxes than the average middle class American.**Well, that's because most of his income is from capital gains and dividends, which are taxed at a lower rate than earned income. It's not rocket science. You earn a wage, higher tax rate, earn capital gains and dividends, lower tax rate. And lets not forget he regularly donates about 14% his income to charity. If you want a lower tax rate, start investing your money to earn capital gains and dividends. You can also lower your tax rate by donating to charity. There's lots of ways to lower your tax rate if that's what you're so concerned about. Here's an interesting story explaining how taxes work http://www.edactivist.com/html/lesson_plan_--_the_economics_o.html
Isabella Valentine

Last one . . .
-And NOW he's been busted for investing in a company that profited from the disposal of aborted fetus's and animal remains that died from medical testing.**Can't say that I heard this story, but not sure what you mean by 'busted'. You libs love killing babies so I would think this would be a good thing. We can't leave these dead babies laying around. I mean, they have to be disposed of in some manner, right.
You obviously have a problem with successful people, as do others (thinking OWS). People in this county used to want to be successful. Now, we have a bunch of people who villify success and want success handed to them. They feel they are entitled to it and they shouldn't have to earn it. It's a sad day for our contry when more people gladly extend their hand for a government handout, then try to earn it. I'm afraid we are about to turn the corner to European Socialism and life in the USA will never be the same.

I don't really care if Erin believes that was said was racist. I honestly had to laugh as she really does read into things. THESE are the kinds of people who buy into Obama's line. Are you one of the 47 % Erin?? Do you really expect Obama to be your savior? The scarey part is that there are many more like her out there. In the book "Dream from my Father", Obama mentions his use of pot many times. Also, Most people did not read the expose' of Obama during his time as a Constitiuonal Lawyer. He was involved in a real estate scandal in Chicago where some 200 blacks were thrown out into the cold in January thanks to Obama being The attorney representing a slum landlord. Can we call him RACIST also, then? OR does that just apply to Whites?? No one wants to convince Erin of her misimpression. We just hope that someday she is not so blind and deaf. Also READ about Environmental Racism. Another MISNOMER and MISGUIDED AGENDA by those on the LEFT>

Was that rant directed towards me? I did not even know this thread was still going. Well I guess you have now had more time to read books by authors who make their living off of "exposing" politicians though all of their supposed evidence has been denied and debunked. Ed Klein wrote a book on Hillary and the Kennedys. Most of these guys have attacked multiple lead politicians bc people bite every time. Of course I am blind and deaf so what would I know. A little skepticism is healthy but this guy fed shoveled crap that you were desperately in the market for so I am not surprised you bought it.
Obama is not my savior. Telling a black person to go back to Kenya when he has never lived in Kenya is awful. Telling a black person from Africa to go back to Africa is awful. I explained that below very carefully without aggression, so if you want to get all riled up be my guest. That story is closed.
I really don't give a darn about Obama smoking pot. Who really does? Finding someone who hasn't smoked pot in college is like finding someone who has never taken a drink and either way it really does not matter. Guess what guys? I am about to turn 30 yrs old here and in my younger days, I smoked pot. Alert the media. Brand me with a jade "W" on all of my clothing. I think the only ppl I know who have not smoked pot would be my Polish Catholic grandmother & maybe my Irish Catholic grandfather. I will ask though as they had both spent time in Ashbury in the sixties.

Lets address who is in that 47%. Children, lower income, retired citizens. Darn those 7 yr olds who don't pay income tax. For the other two, they do pay taxes. Considering what my money is going towards I would love to opt out of taxes.
I am not on the left. Obama is not my savior. I deeply disapprove of the two leading parties. If you think romney _is_ the savior bc of his business savvy...hahahahahaha. they are very similar. I will vote against fear mongering & grading public schools. Whether that is Obama or one of the other two candidates that you guys forget exist...I am undecided.

What any of that rant had to do with my previous comment about ppl publishing one liners telling Obama to go back to Kenya...I do not know.
As far as real estate scandals and getting money from shady people. This has been going on forever. This will always go on as long as we worship whomever the two leading parties give us and proceed to fight to the death about it. I don't really have time to look into all of this, but I would not be surprised if Obama was involved with shady people. Denying that is as useless as denying that Romney is not equally as guilty if not more.
We allow our government to give us these sub par presidential options and we even _fight_ for them. It is absurd. So let me be clear that when I combat racist comments or media lies about Obama, this is not me saying that "Obama is my savior and wholly (pun) awesome." I am blind and deaf? No my friend. I am considering picking what I consider to be the lesser of two evils bc grading our public school systems and further involvement with the middle east is detrimental to this country.
Don't buy everything you read. Especially from people who make a living off of "exposing" politician after politician. They are all crooked to some degree....and yet we believe them when they send American citizens off to die with billions of dollars behind them...This is strange to me.

And Paul Ryan voted for auto bailouts. I just don't get why you guys think there is such a stark difference between these candidates. Look at their voting records. TARP began with Bush. These two leading parties are entangled in private business money to the point of no return. In the past I have said that the GOP is dead, but I am willing to concede that both blue and red are long past dead. Read some other sources. Look outside your party.
I don't always agree with the hosts of this radio show, but check out Free Talk Live. You can listen online or download the podcasts onto your ipod for free. Sunday night is my favorite show. They discuss issues outside of the box which is just so refreshing and they are neither republican nor democrat. Some of the hosts are libertarian, but most are just tired of buying into all of this nonsense fed to us by our bought government and media. Two of the hosts are former right wing conservatives. None of them are voting for either Romney or Obama. As I said a million times before, if I vote for Obama it is because I am really opposed to the right wing education and foreign policy platform. Education may be the only area where the two parties actually differ. Foreign policy...I am just hoping that I can take Obama for his word (which I doubt).

Cathy half the things you say are not true and you need to read something except for liberal papers. How many people work for Staples and other companies he saved in the United States, If he had illegal offshore accounts why does everyone know about them and why is he paying taxes on the money. All Mormon at the age do missionary trip and his number wasn't pulled to go serve in Viet Nam as many others were not either. obummer paid the same amount of taxes as Romney so why aren't you slamming him. I agree with him about getting a college education that you can afford. You can get the same education at a STATE COLLEGE instead of going to an IVY College same classes and cheaper at a State College but some of the young who can't afford it want to go to Harvard and Yale and come out of College owing 200,000 while if the took the same classes at a State College they would only owe 60,000. Big difference in price for the same degree.
What has obama done for the USA besides put us in debt to almost 7 trillion, no jobs, companies like solar heat flopped, he is trying to kill the coal industry and put millions more out of office.
I will vote for Romney and not a social planner that never even had a lemonade stand.

Obama Admits to Smoking Weed Daily
Obama: “Yes, I smoke weed everyday. So the (swear word removed) what?”
Washington, DC (Rueters)
In a press conference Friday, President Barack Obama admitted to smoking marijuana on a regular basis. Responding to a question about a soon-to-be-released biography by David Maraniss titled Barack Obama: The Story, in which the author details to a considerable extent the President’s drug use in his teenage years, the President grew enraged.
“Yes, I smoked weed when I was younger, okay?” said a visibly agitated President Obama when asked if he did indeed use cannabis in high school. “I’ve said that shit already!”
Added Obama: “And I’ll let you in on a another little secret: I still smoke weed everyday. So the (swear word removed, but you can read article what he said) what?”

Michelle Obama said that it was natural to release a cook book as she has always been promoting a healthy lifestyle. Michelle says the book is going to help families who want to keep kids away from the temptation of fast food. Jon Stewart also wanted to talk about the recent biography of Barack Obama, which refers to drugs use.
Although Michelle Obama was visibly disturbed by the question, she admitted that she smoked weed back in the day, when she was in college."

Now, I do not pretend to know you personally and would never accuse you of being a "racist," but let me ask you this:
Telling a black person to go back to Africa would resonate as a racist statement in most people's ears, correct? Even if that person had one or two relatives from Africa. I would become extremely angry if someone told my friend from Ghana (country in Africa) to return to Africa.
And then, you add "rowboat" which continues the stereotype that all Africans come from very primitive cultures. I can promise you that my friend from Ghana grimaces whenever someone makes statements like "Africans don't have shoes." My professor would make these statements to the class that included my friend from Ghana, intentionally creating a vivid example of the African stereotype perpetuated by Western culture. Certainly there are less developed areas in Africa, just as there are less developed areas in the United States where one might have a rowboat but no car.
So though you may not be a racist person, I hope that you can see that what you said is incredibly racist. If you have ever gotten angry that someone accused you of not liking Obama bc of his race, it is probably bc you make statements that are the equivalent of telling a black person to go back to Africa. Whether you are aware of this or not, I am going to ask you to stop.

Erin Conners - You do read the news don't you? "CC" made no racist comment but was just expressing an opinion to have Obama go back to Kenya where so-called "birthers" believe he was born and therefore a citizen of that country. They also believe that his Hawaiian birth certificate is a fake and that he is not a citizen. So, I ask you to stop calling people racist just because they criticize a political person who is black. Stop throwing the race card.
MSgt. John DeLallo
1:06 pm on Monday, July 9, 2012
Erin Conners:
Please. Playing the race card? Wanda Sykes, a well known black female comedian said, shortly after Obama was elected, "he better not (expetive) up, or the brothers and sisters will be asking 'what's that half-white guy doing?'" Obama is no more black than any Creole, high yellow, mulatto, or half a dozen other mixed ethnicities. Indeed, he is no more black than Hines Ward. There are Cuban boxers who are black, Carribean Islanders that are black, and American citizens who trace their roots back to the 1600's that are black. Obama is part Irish, for crying out loud. Rememer the "Beer Summit"?
More to the point, I personally don't care where he goes, as long as it is NOT back to the White House. When you begin a paragraph with "I ...would never accuse you of being a "racist", but...", you've indeed labeled that person a racist.

Well, no...There is a difference between saying something that would be perceived as racist, and being racist. People can often make offensive comments without thinking first where that comment might come from and if that comment might be insulting on the premise of ethnicity. I explained myself very clearly, and I don't feel the need to really defend myself further. I did only, and can only, suggest that we all think about what we say, and why we are saying it, so as to effectively communicate without unintentionally/intentionally isolating someone because of their ethnicity.
Take that for what you will. My comment stands.

Erin first of all you are the racist, as I said that because of Obama has bragged about how great growing up in Kenya was. I also know that Obama is Irish so what if I would of said why don't we shove a potato in his mouth so we don't have to listen to the lies out of his mouth would I be a racist because I insulted the Irish People, whom he also bragged about being. BTW thank you for reminding me that Kenya was in Africia. If I would of said put Obama out in the middle of the ocean in a rowboat without any oars, then I would consider myself a racist but I did no such thing.
Would you like to come meet my brothers daughter in law that is very embarrassed over President Obama as he is bi-racial and he can't even admit that he is. He always refers to himself as a black man, but was raised in a white society by white grandparents.
So Erin get off your high horse, I never said anything about the Africans not having shoes nor did I make any racist remarks. Remember it is always the racist that calls others out others as racist such as the NAACP, Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton, etc do. So get off your high horse and quit calling me a racist. By the way that was not a racist remark, only racist take it as one.. Don't like what I post don't read as I quit reading what some post also.

Here is a quick quote from Obama's most famous speech "A more perfect union" Please have your bro's daughter-in-law read it as it makes me really sad that she thinks he is ashamed of any part of his heritage...an opinion that is, I am sure, based on misinformation as all evidence points to the contrary.
"I am the son of a black man from Kenya and a white woman from Kansas. I was raised with the help of a white grandfather who survived a Depression to serve in Patton's Army during World War II and a white grandmother who worked on a bomber assembly line at Fort Leavenworth while he was overseas. I've gone to some of the best schools in America and lived in one of the world's poorest nations. I am married to a black American who carries within her the blood of slaves and slaveowners - an inheritance we pass on to our two precious daughters. I have brothers, sisters, nieces, nephews, uncles and cousins, of every race and every hue, scattered across three continents, and for as long as I live, I will never forget that in no other country on Earth is my story even possible."

Liberty.
Ben Franklin said "Those who would give up Liberty to purchase security, deserve neither"
Obama believes it is the governments role to provide safety - i.e. massive government regulation and taxation for "health care".
He doesn't care that the US Constitution limits the role of the federal government to enumerated powers.
Obama does not care about individual liberty, especially if your liberty impedes his Utopian agenda of "social justice".
If it isn't obvious now, in 10-20-30 years, it will be easy to measure the erosion of individual liberties caused by Obama and his ilk.
Liberty is my number one concern. Not for me, but for my child and the next generation.

The comments that I have read here comes from the belly. It is very pensive from the pain of the economy/wars/education/health care etc.coming up short of what we were hoping for most of our adult lives. These are good comments because they speak to the reasons we feel like we do. D. Smith summarizes well that the problem is systemic. Our values for humanity has changed. Steve says it is liberty over security. We should return to what made us stand tall in troubled times. bd speaks of lost confidence. Again, a return to the things that drove our engine of hopes. I agree with each one fully. We may be on different sides of the isle in politics, but these are the pieces of the conversation that can make me feel better when I read them. I actually believe we are standing beside each other with a thumbs up to each others contribution. Anxiety has gripped us all and the issues that bring life and meaning to us rises to the top when the 'belly' oxygen fills them. Cathy .... you list all you can about Romney including what he did while attending (I believe) a prep school many years ago. While I do not care for or condone what he may have done then .... it was a long time ago. And isn't it just amazing how much of Romney we all know about ... much unlike our sitting president where we are not able to see his school records or transcripts or any writings from college. Amazing. Why is that? I had little respect (if any) for the man before he took office and have a negative amount now.
The economy has gotten so bad in these three years and I lost my job due to downsizing shortly after this man got into office.
While I am not happy with the choices we are looking at in November, I will vote for Mr. Romney as Obama has had his chance and he has proven that someone with no business experience or ever having held a real job (community organizer is not a real job) has no business leading the most powerful country on the planet.

"Why, pray tell, do you endeavor to portray yourself as some sort of unbiased, neutral, oh-so-well informed observer, rather than just come out and admit that you are an Obama supporter?"
Is it an either/or situation? Your question is a trap as I cannot come out and say "I support Obama" without then agreeing to not actually being well informed...Oh Robert. Liberal is not a dirty word. "obama supporter" is not a label that automatically has negative connotation. This is why I largely ignore you. Am I well informed? I try. I also try very hard to be a good person, which is what you are misinterpreting as an attempt at neutrality. I actually do not believe that neutrality exists, but the effort is a noble one in certain situations. As far as a resolution as to how I feel about Obama (since you are so very curious)?I can say that I am fascinated by Obama, as he is a brilliant man, but I am very careful about my votes/opinion, so I would not say that I support him just yet.

This is an fact check into the 47th place claim. It includes information from the Wall Street Journal, hardly a liberal rag. At a time when the country's economy was doing well, Mass. had 1.4% job growth, while the rest of the country had a 5.3% job growth, leaving them 47th for his entire term.
Interesting that the article also comes to the conclusion that the executive (governor or president) has very little to do with job creation. Most experts agree on this, but then where would that leave Mitt on the campaign trail? I think both campaigns should lay off job creation as it is not something the president or governor does, but it won't happen. People will continue to blame Obama for slow growth, high gas prices and many other things the president doesn't control. Blaming Romney for Mass.'s slow growth must be fair game then.
So, sorry, Lou, I AM NOT TOTALLY WRONG ON JOB CREATION IN MASS. Huh, I actually had to reach over and hit a key to type all those caps, didn't feel like a normal way of talking with my hands to me. I guess that's just another thing we disagree on.

Just to add on - Econ 101 - jobs are created by demand for products and services, not politicians. When working people have had their wages cut or have been laid off in order to increase the bottom line, people don't have money to spend, thus no demand, thus no added jobs. Now you can say that the top 1-2% are making considerably more than they used to, so their demand should be growing. Unfortunately we can't all be in the high end furniture, swimming pool installation and security system business. We need demand from the middle class, while all you people are supporting policies to continue to erode the middle class.

New York Times Barack Obama, asked about drug history, admits he inhaled - Americas - International Herald Tribune By Katharine Q. Seelye
Published: Tuesday, October 24, 2006 http://www.nytimes.com/2006/10/24/world/americas/24iht-dems.3272493.html
PHOENIX, Arizona — Senator Barack Obama, the Illinois Democrat who said Sunday that he was considering running for president in 2008, has created a little sunlight between himself and both Bill and Hillary Rodham Clinton.
For one thing, he said, "When I was a kid, I inhaled."
"That was the point," Obama told an audience of magazine editors.
The direct admission was in contrast to Bill Clinton's denial in his 1992 campaign for president that he had smoked marijuana.
"I didn't inhale," Clinton said, cementing the idea that he liked to have things both ways.
Obama had written in his first book, "Dreams From My Father" (1995), before entering politics, that he had used marijuana and cocaine ("maybe a little blow"). He said he had not tried heroin because he did not like the pusher who was trying to sell it to him.
In an interview here at a meeting of the American Society of Magazine Editors, Obama said he was not making light of the subject.
You can go finish reading the article at the link, he also admitted to doing blow.

Jesse Jackson is a racist.
Racist (n):
1. The belief that race accounts for differences in human character or ability and that a particular race is superior to others.
2. Discrimination or prejudice based on race.
I made a claim in the comments of this post that upset at least one person. I maintain that Jesse Jackson has done more to hurt the ideal of racial equity than David Duke ever could. To a lot of people that position is ridiculous but when you stop to think about it, it does make sense.
David Duke is marginalized by his very adherence to the idea that non-white races are inferior. The only people who take him seriously are those already in agreement with his ideals/point of view. He reaches a very small audience that is getting smaller as time goes by. Jackson, on the other hand, is embraced by politicians, media, and populace and so his word reaches a much wider, and much more receptive audience. He uses his position, in words anyway, to denounce racism but his actions have done more to reinforce racist thought than anything Duke could have ever done. (Continue)

The first thing Jackson does that's harmful is to almost immediately jump in on any situation involving blacks and label it as a race issue regardless of whether or not race is even a factor. One recent example is Jackson's calling out of the media for using the word 'refugee' during/after Katrina. Jackson wanted them to be called 'displaced persons' because he claimed that calling them 'refugees' was racist. Since the word refugee literally means someone who is searching for refuge there is NO racial connotation to the term. This kind of grandstanding by Jackson is drawing attention away from legitimate cases of racist behavior and turning Jackson into "The Boy Who Cried Wolf." It's getting to the point that Jackson won't be able to label a definitive case of racism and be taken seriously. He is marginalizing himself and, by extension, his cause over time.
The primary mistake by Jackson though is in his approach to blacks in general. He thinks that reparations are owed to the black community. He repeatedly asserts that black Americans are incapable of bettering themselves without some from of outside help. What kind of message does this send to people? This kind of self-defeating tripe demeans the character and strength of blacks everywhere.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying Jackson is doing this on purpose. I believe that he honestly wants to make things better and his intentions, sometimes anyway, are completely altruistic. His actions though are doing more to eat away at the foundations of racial equality than the vocal supremacist groups could ever do.
To sum up, Jackson is doing a phenomenal job paving the road to hell but failing us all with his short-sighted attempts at addressing racism. We have to get past the point where someone's skin color makes a difference. As long as people like Jackson and Duke, as well as programs like affirmative action, constantly reinforce the idea that the cellular levels of melanin in someone's skin matters we will NEVER achieve the ideal that people like Dr. King worked so hard to bring about.

Jesse Jackson forced to apologise again to Barack Obama for racist slur
Jesse Jackson, the veteran civil rights activist, has been forced to issue a grovelling apology to Senator Barack Obama after it emerged he had used the word "niggers" while disparaging the Democratic presidential candidate.
By Toby Harnden in Washington
7:44PM BST 17 Jul 2008
The Rev Jackson had already said sorry for saying of Mr Obama that he would like to "cut off his nuts" for talking down to black people.
He was speaking off-air on Fox News and did not realise that his comments to a fellow guest were being picked up by a microphone.
It has now emerged that he said: "Barack...he's talking down to black people...telling niggers how to behave."

Fox News said it had no immediate plans to broadcast Mr Jackson's full comments.
The "n-word" is considered so incendiary in the United States that it is very rarely used, even by people condemning the use of it.
Mr Jackson's shocking comments, which were prompted by Mr Obama's call for black fathers to show a greater sense of responsibility, highlight a schism between Mr Obama, 46, and older black politicians such as Mr Jackson, two decades older, who have deep roots in the civil rights movement.
"I am deeply saddened and distressed by the pain and sorrow that I have caused as a result of my hurtful words," Mr Jackson he said in a statement.
"I again to Senator Barack Obama, Michelle Obama, their children as well as to the American public.
"There really is no justification for my comments and I hope that the Obama family and the American public will forgive me." The Obama campaign declined to comment.
Mr Jackson, who supported Mr Obama against Hillary Clinton in the Democratic primaries ran for president in 1984 and 1988 and is considered by many to have blazed a trail for the younger man to follow.
But Obama campaign advisers have said privately that there has been an uneasiness between the two men, partly because Mr Obama, brought up in Hawaii and with a white mother, is not viewed by Mr Jackson as a mainstream African-American.

"But we have to talk about the fact that this is a really pervasive word and a word that meant not just degradation towards black people by people outside the race but a word that older black people have used for years behind closed doors.
Referring to rappers, hip hop artists and their followers, he added: "Now we're seeing a different definition of the word, young people who believe they now have power over the word and it's not as negative. I don't agree with that but that's the philosophy behind it."

The NAACP is Racist
By QUIN HILLYER on 7.13.10 @ 8:58PM
The NAACP's ludicrous resolution against the Tea Parties today is a sign that the once-proud organization is nothing now but an increasingly irrelevant, hopelessly intellectually corrupt group of race hustlers. For the record, it was an NAACP lawyer who, by multiple accounts, lobbied the Obama/Holder Justice Department to drop the case against the New Black Panthers. Now THAT is racist. The NAACP attorney was coming to the defense of a group whose president praised Osama bin Laden within half a year after the 9/11 attacks. These people are sick, sick, sick. Sick, and racist. Viciously racist. Meanwhile, as both Deroy Murdock and Tim Scott have explained, the Tea Partiers are absolutely not racist. I'll stick with Murdock and Scott over the racist race hustlers of the NAACP.

Back in May, the NAACP finally spoke out about an incident where two SEIU members were accused of assaulting a black man vending Gadsden flags at a Conservative rally.
Gateway Pundit provides this transcript:
Back in the day, we used to call someone like that, and I want to remind you, uh, when this incident occurred, I was really struck by a front page picture of this guy, which we called, a Negro, I mean that we call him a Negro in the fact that he works for not for our people but against our people. In the old days, we call him an Uncle Tom. I just gotta say that. Here it is, the day after a young brother, a young man, I didn’t mean to call him a brother, but on the front page of the Post Dispatch, ironically, he’s sitting in a wheelchair, being kissed on the forehead, by a European. Now just imagine that as a poster child picture, not working for our people.
The group that is supposed to represent all “colored people” calls a black Conservative an “Uncle Tom.” And their representative apparently is unaware that the NAACP was originally called the National Negro Committee, before deciding to include all “colored” people.

In the Gladney attack, one of Gladney’s attackers was white. One can only conject that the “new and improved” NAACP will protect only Liberal “colored people,” and selected whites—particularly those instrumental in giving beatdowns to “Negros.”
On the night of the incident, Gladney was working to provide for his family selling Gadsden flags at an event. Of all the people these two union thugs could have selected at what the Left would deem a racist event, the thugs avoided the hundreds (crowd estimates were 1000 people) of white folks and found the only black person. There that Negro is, Cletus!
Gladney was not adorned in red, white, and blue, nor was his appearance overly patriotic. He looked and acted like a “vendor.” Nevertheless, the two SEIU hooligans, both at least fifty pounds heavier than Gladney singled him out for their attack. Wearing their gang colors, the...

purple SEIU t-shirts, his attackers made it perfectly clear that they represented the union–apparently Gladney didn’t have his union card.
So a black man was attacked for no reason, and while on the job; yet there was no outcry in the black community, no Sharpton visit, no Jackson press conference, and we now know the NAACP’s stance on the issue. The best they could come up with when attacking Gladney in the court of public opinion was: He didn’t even have medical insurance!
Gone are the days when the National Negro Committee turned NAACP actually stood for Republican ideals and truly represented the interest of blacks and other “colored people.” Like on June 18, 1935 in Murray v Pearson, when Thurgood Marshall and Charles Hamilton Houston successfully argued the landmark case to open the University of Maryland School of Law. This was back with the NAACP truly cared about educating blacks and protecting the rights of blacks.

The speaker mentioned that Gladney was being “kissed on the forehead, by a European.” I’d like to know who is kissing the NAACP on the forehead. What exactly have they accomplished for black people in the modern day?
The worse neighborhoods in America. The worse schools. The highest crime rates. The most people on welfare, per capita. Highest teenage pregnancy per capita. Highest high school dropout rates per capita. Lowest home ownership per capita. Lowest business ownership per capita.
Here’s the wrap:
The NAACP couldn’t do worse for blacks if it had been founded by Confederate Civil War veterans[1]. And in the Gladney incident, the NAACP proved that they are no better than the KKK.
Like the KKK, the NAACP has its second-class citizens—black Conservatives. Nevertheless, given the effectiveness of the NAACP in dealing effectively with black issues, I suggest that black Conservatives avoid the “help” that the NAACP provides, and enjoy being second-class citizens. Just try to avoid the occasional beatdowns.

Dear Mr. Pietosi:
I felt that I needed to respectfully respond to you post. I am not sure where you are getting your information that "[w]e don't know how smart he is because NO ONE seems to have his college transcripts and NO ONE remembers seeing him in college or even having him as a classmate!" (emphasis in the original)
Please allow me to confirm for you that I certainly remember having Mr. Obama as a classmate of mine at Harvard. Mr. Obama graduated from Harvard Law School in 1991, which was the same year that I graduated from Harvard College. Although I was not personally friends with our current President, I did see him on campus from time to time. Most of the students at Harvard knew of Mr. Obama since he was the first African-American leader of the Harvard Law Review. One of my favorite momentos from my college days is my graduation program which lists me as receiving my undergraduate degree, and "Barack Hussein Obama" (yes, he used his full name back then too) receiving his law degree, magna cum laude.
With due respect, the person/persons giving you this information are in error.

Oh, where to begin. JustMe, this entire rant is from a blog by an anonymous person who calls himself "Uncommon Insanity." His posts include gems like a discussion of whether or not Jesus is a zombie. Anyone who would like to read his, um, interesting posts may do so here: http://mindwyrm.blogspot.com/. However he has not posted since September of 2011 when he proclaimed that dogs have passed us on the evolutionary scale.
As for the rude comments Jesse Jackson made about Obama, that's very old news and everyone's over it. Last month, a Tea Party leader in Arkansas made a racist joke then later apologized. I would not assume that the entire Tea Party is racist based upon one ill-timed remark any more than I would assume Jesse Jackson is based upon the same criteria.
The NAACP is Racist "article" is also just an opinion blog and is one person's opinion.
As for Ken Gladney, his "attackers" were acquitted by a jury. There was ample video evidence that he had not been harmed and that he (and his lawyer) had exaggerated the attack. also, Gladney is not a member of the NAACP, so that supposed incident where he was being kissed on the forehead by a European does not mean the NAACP was being kissed on the forehead. You aren't in the NAACP because you're black, you have to join.

He's a desperate man. WHY don't we hear him bragging about his performance but instead blaming Bush, wildfires, hurricanes ATM machines, the republicans ~even though he had BOTH houses of congress for 18 months, China, Greece, Spain, Italy, Tsunamis, global warming Ha ha ha, and ANYTHING BUT HIMSELF for his failure to lead us out of this poor economy? Lou, Those Obama banners are advertisements purchased on the sites by the Obama campaign. There are also ones running that were purchased by the Romney campaign. How many there are depends how much those campaigns choose to spend on Patch advertising. Any candidate (national, state, local) is welcome to purchase advertising on Patch. How much they spend is up to them.

Today, we read a story of Pres Obama proposing to extend tax rates for all classes, except those making over $200K. To the top 5%, he is proposing a tax rate increase.
If anybody was missing any former markers of how removed the President is from mainstream American, this proposal should be a wake-up call. I've already seen (maybe on this thread as well?) the idea that "it does not effect very many people." Yes, we've seen that argument advanced in the discussions about Obamacare, "it won't effect very many of us." This is a very short-sighted response. No, the number of individuals effected won't be large in the overall scheme, but it is the "who" that is being effected.
This morning's report shows the President's proposal will impact nearly one million small business owners. Ouch! These are the ones who are in the best position to hire workers. These are the ones who will expand their business. Why put a further burden on the very ones in the right position to help us with the economic recovery?
Also, it will effect those older individuals, some of which may be retired, or near retirement. These are the ones who have the capital to invest. Capital is the fuel that drives the economy, and taking more capital out of circulation is a poor strategy for infusing capital where it can be productive.
Roger
6:11 am on Tuesday, July 10, 2012
For those suggesting raising tax rates will not make much difference in the class of earners making $200K or more, read recent reports of migration patterns. In recent years, after passing a "millionaire tax," MD has lost over a billion dollars in tax revenue, losses resulting from the target payers leaving the state. When the tax was proposed it was intended to close the budget gap (cliche for "we need more money from the top few"). Now, a few years later, the outcome of the new tax policy shows the intention has been completely reversed in reality.
A similar pattern is shown on a national level, with more people at the top end of earners moving to other more tax-friendly countries. The capital from these folks is no longer available to help the US.
So, when I hear statements like, "it will hardly be felt by the few," I shudder. Clearly, these statements are very naive. These statements were made in the Obamacare discussion, plus other places. Yes, tax policy does impact how people choose to live their lives, and where they choose to live. Even a small change can have a negative impact on total revenues.
What was the President's advisers thinking when they made yesterday's proposal?

Roger, I know for a fact this is going to effect my business. we will be laying off 8 people very soon, something that I really don't want to do because of obamancare. I had a meeting with my accountant this morning and he said if this does go though, he advises me that I will have to lay 2 more off. This is 10 hard working people that are going to lose their jobs and it is all obama's fault. I can't blame Bush as he isn't around as President and he didn't pass obamacare nor is Bush to blame because obama " for a one-year extension of Bush-era tax cuts on annual income up to $250,000, while letting those that chiefly benefit the very wealthy expire on schedule at year's end".
My accountant told me I would be better off out sourcing my work overseas and having no employees in the United States. I am trying to figure out a way to keep all of my employees working full-time and all we can come up with now is either move the company or take every ones hours down to 30 a week, or I will be keeping my employees at 40 hours, getting rid of 8 now 10 and the ones that are left will be eating up a lot of overtime. obama who thinks he is a king needs to get off his high horse and start listening to what the people need as i'm not the same one faced with this situation and it is sad. So glad he won't be able to blame Bush when unemployment jumps to 20 % within the next 2-3 years.

@bob – I agree there is a need to raise revenue. The difference between what most would call Democrats and Republicans is HOW we raise additional revenue.
One party would have us believe there are groups – whether people or businesses – that do not pay their fair share in taxes. To remedy this injustice, this party seeks to target these groups to either raise their taxes or eliminate potential tax loopholes.
Another party believes that if we lower taxes across the board, it will foster an economic environment that creates companies and jobs which means we add more taxpayers to the rolls.
The first party wants to raise revenue by taking more from a few. The second party wants to take less from many. I prefer the second party’s approach.

Do I make too much money to get Medicaid?
Resources – you can only have a limited amount of resources and get Medicaid. The current limit is $1,500 for a single person and $2,250 for a married couple. Resources include things like land, money, bank accounts, insurance policies, and some vehicles. Resources don’t include the house you live in, furniture, one vehicle, and clothing. If you are a nursing home resident, your spouse may keep more assets.
Income – In 2005, the Medicaid income guideline for one person is $579 per month. For a married couple, the limit is $869 per month. Certain additional children or persons in the household add $290 each to the income limit. Under the spend-down rule, if you can show each month that you spend all your extra income on medical bills or health insurance premiums, you may still be eligible for Medicaid.
Certain low-income Medicare recipients may qualify for one of the limited Medicaid programs. This coverage includes payment of all or part of the Medicare Part B premiums, and may include payment of Medicare deductibles and co-payments.

Then the "millionaires who own companies will hire more workers, who then pay taxes. Lowering taxes has always created jobs that RAISED revenues. Even King Obama siad in 2008 that raising taxes on ANYONE is the "worst thing you can do during a recession and poor economy" So WHAT changed? I have offered much substance on issues throughout these threads the last couple of days, only to be met with cries of "communist, liar, etc." by you and others. I'm an adult, I can take it. I have argued on many different forums and in many taverns about politics. Some of it has been civil, some of it was reduced to cries of communism, racial epithets and screaming fits. Why does this always seem to come from the right? Conservative is a perfectly acceptable description of your way of thinking. My way of thinking normally gets preceded by stupid or lying, as in stupid liberal, or shifted to the extreme of communism. Facism is the belief in corporatism above all else, but because of the atrocities that have been associated with facism, I do not lower myself to call conservatives fascists.
As for Obama and Columbia - read this http://www.factcheck.org/2010/02/obama-at-columbia-university/ and please lay off the right wing half truths and exagerations that get sent around in emails. Never said that Romney didn't enroll in the draft, only that he didn't serve, actually was in France (proven) after school for his church, yet found the time to protest in favor of the war. I know the Republican party has a recent history of chicken hawks, but this needs to be brought out. These are facts.
As for your ethnicity, you've brought it up countless times, which makes it fair game. And also not an excuse for writing styles or inflammatory content.

I really wish people would look at the whole picture rather than being a ROBOT and just pull a lever.
This is a small sample of the picture I am looking at as a small business owner .
I employee 14 people who all pay their fair share of taxes every two weeks, along with the extremely high amount of taxes I pay every year as a business owner Now our government wants to tax me more,
My health care cost have gone of 30% in the last 2 years along with every other costs to do business increasing 20% to 40%
Where does it stop?
How much is enough?
The government didn’t create these jobs I took the risk of starting and operating a business to create these jobs. I didn’t ask anyone for a handout, I did what my parents and grandparents did I busted my butt. Am I not to be rewarded for taking that risk?
The problem I see is that people are not willing to work like our parents and grandparents did, they rather sit back, accept every handout the government wants to give and tell everyone what’s wrong with our country
If someone believes their boss or company is making too much money get off your BUTT and START YOUR COMPANY take the risk This is still AMERICA you still have that opportunity

Does anyone really care about Obama’s grades at Columbia? Is that really going to be the wedge issue that tips this election? It’s going to be extremely difficult for Obama to run on this record. The same is true of Romney. This seems to be setting itself up as a “lesser of two evils” election.
The question I myself is who did better with the hand he was dealt? My answer is Romney.
First, I consider healthcare a wash. How can Romney credibly state he thinks Obamacare is bad policy will work to repeal it when he is the architect?
If you look at their time in office, Romney did more as a Republican in a state with huge Democrat majorities in both houses of the state legislature than Obama given the fact that his party controlled both houses of Congress for the first two years and the upper chamber his entire term.
Add to the fact that Obama has rarely received a paycheck that didn’t come from taxpayers and has not created a single job. Romney has been successful in the private sector and has created and saved jobs.
While Romney may not be my number one guy, he’s better than the alternative.

Outraged---It's not that I care about his grades--it's the lack of info coming from a guy who promised "the most transparent administration in US History! I agree on your points about Romney being the lesser of two evils because NEITHER PARTY cares about US! We need a President who isn't concerned about a second term to come in and SLASH THE SPENDING and ENTITLEMENTS. It IS going to hurt ALL OF US---but if we don't do it--there will be NOTHING LEFT as we are already borrowing money to cover all these programs. Now add in Obamacare and you can KISS America goodbye as we know it. we're not adding 30 million---what about the estimated 20 million like me who may lose their current coverage because my employer would pay LESS in the tax/penalty than he would keeping us covered? THAT makes it 50 MILLION NEW people to cover and we simply do NOT HAVE MONEY to do that. Socialiized health coverage may work in countries of up to about 20 million people but 300 million---NEVER GOING TO HAPpEN without crippling us as a nation. Regardless of whether Romney was for that healthcare before--he has pledged to repeal it---THAT is all that matters now. He felt it best for his state--which was completely different than covering 300 million people!

@Lou – As far as Obama’s lack of transparency, opponents have already “whipped that pony” and the public at large don’t seem to care. It makes better sense to focus on how Obama’s policies have affected their lives, rather than dredge up Columbia, Kenya, Reverend Wright, or his birth certificate.
I’m not sure Obamacare is going to be the issue that sinks him either. It is true that a majority of citizens oppose the legislation, but I think the Republicans are going to be hard pressed to make the distinction between Obama and Romney on this issue. I can just imagine Obama thanking Romney in their first televised debate for serving as the architect for Obamacare. The sad part is that Obama’s telling the truth. I think the bigger issue will be unemployment.
Regarding Obamacare, let’s stipulate for a moment that Romney is genuine in his intent to repeal it. In order for this to happen, voters would also have to elect Republican majorities in the House and Senate. Through the process of reconciliation, they could strike at the heart of Obamacare by attacking the legislation’s tax increases, insurance premiums, Medicaid expansion and drug subsidies, just to name a few. Simply put, not only would all the pieces have to fall in place perfectly, but also the presence of a legislative and executive branch with the intestinal fortitude to take a tough stance to make this happen.

I can't disagree with what you say here---except that the helathcare in one state SHOULDN'T be compared to across the nation but you're right--perception is reality and Obama will make it seem as though Romney and he are identical on this. I also don't think Healthcare in and of itself will be the issue--but i DO think the forcing of citizens to pay for it or be taxed WILL be important, when you add in all the other liberties being erroded (this started with Bush so I am not blaming Obama only) The economy is number one for sure--followed in my mind by a President who has NO regard for the rule of law or the constitution as evidenced by his directive for Homeland Security to STOP prosecuting certain illegal aliens and his discontinuing the record checking in AZ. Quite simply--if he doesn't like a ruling he simply IGNORES it and issues a directive or Executive Order. NO one man should have THIS much authority and people are feeling uncomfortable with the amount of "latitude" he is taking. either way I truly believe he is going to be beaten by double digits. these polls are DEAD EVEN but many will vote against Obama after polling for him. They simply don't want to be harrassed by liberal protesters or union thugs. And i know that for a FACT after having personal experience where a union member was todl in no uncertain terms to vote for Obama "or else"

@Lou – It’s going to be difficult to draw distinct lines between the two candidates based on their records. They’re slightly different versions of the same portrait.
Regarding healthcare, the majority of Americans do oppose the bill but I’m not sure they actually believe Romney or anyone else can do anything about it. I think the election is going to be what will happen to our country in the next four years and which candidate will do the least amount of harm.
No one believes Romney is a maverick that will shake the establishment to its core and make fundamental changes. That said, if Romney can convince the majority of voters he will at least slow down our eventual decent into socialism, he might have a chance.

You know, or in your case, you probably don't know, but most of polls published by the mainsteam media (libs) are always slanted left because of two reasons. 1. And as for your earlier comments:

Obama is not black, he is bi-racial and no one has called the President names. His policies are clearly Socialist, like it or not, that is the term. Socialist/Communist, it really doesn't matter, they both involve government control, but in a different manner.
Socialism: You have two cows. The government takes one and gives it to your neighbor because he doesn’t have a cow.
Communism: You have two cows. The government takes both and gives you the milk.
Fascism: You have two cows. The government takes both and sells you the milk.
Nazism: You have two cows. The government takes both and shoots you.
Capitalism: You have two cows. You sell one and buy a bull. Your herd multiplies and the economy grows. You sell them and retire on the income.
Capitalism is the American way and I'll take it any day over the Obama, Pelosi, Reed, Frank, Dodd failed policies.

@BG – You’re right. Who really cares about drug use/bullying 20+ years ago? No one believes the election is going to be decided by these issues. It’s just desperate attempts by desperate campaigns to find some issue with which to beat their opponent over the head.
Obama and Romney are really not that different from one another. Romney is a bit more conservative fiscally and Obama is a bit more liberal socially. At the end of the day, Obama is driving our country over the cliff towards socialism at 70 mph and Romney, if elected, might slow it down to 40 mph. Either way, the destination is the same.
The big issue in this campaign is going to be getting Americans back to work. If you believe it is the role of government to spend taxpayer money to grow the economy, vote for Obama. If you believe government should get out of the way, reduce taxes to free up the private sector to grow the economy, vote for Romney. Now it’s up to the candidates to convince a majority to their point of view.
This will decide the election as it is probably the only measureable difference between the two.

I think this post has run its course so I haven't said much since yesterday. The fact is that there is NOTHING anyone can say and NO amount of facts, obvious or not, that Obama supporters will listen to or admit to~PERIOD. To ignore the horrible condition this country is currently in and in fact we?e gotten WORSE since obama took office, proves its useless to continue to try to point out why a new President and direction is desperately needed. The current administration has successfully gotten their supporters to completely IGNORE the poor job they've done by creating their “hate the rich and blame Bush AND everything and everyone else but themselves“ mentality. I have to give them credit~theyce pulled off the biggest fraud and shell game in American History so far BUT«history has shoown that when we are dragged too far to the left, the voters bring things back to a “center~right“ position and I'm confident that WILL be the case again come election day by double digits! Then America will at least delay CERTAIN RUIN until a REAL hero comes along with genuine Hope and Change. Obama supporters think just the same: there is Nothing anyone can say and no amount of facts, obvious or not, that Romney supporters will listen to or admit to. They think this country is in horrible condition because of actions taken by the Republicans, poor stewardship by Bush, then a lack of action and cooperation by the Republican-controlled congress over the past 4 years. And getting their supporters to completely ignore the factors that got us into this mess by creating their "hate the poor and minorities and everyone and blaming everyone but themselves." It's just a matter of perspective. No one is stupid, delusional or uninformed, they just have a different opinion and point of view. That's what makes our political system unique and interesting.

FREE UNICORNS TO THE PEOPLE!
Sorry, I got carried away. I thought this was the place to make non sequitur statements on a thread about which issue was going to be the most important one this November.
The issue is going to be the economy. Which candidate presents the best case for putting Americans back to work?
I ask a simple question. Do we think that a candidate who believes it is the role of government to intrude so intimately in the lives of citizens that it fosters a culture of dependence is capable of moving our economy forward and creating jobs?
Exhibit A: More Americans went on SS disability (85,000) than found a job (80,000) last month. The trend will continue as 275,000 more people filed for disability in June. Since 2009, about 2.6 million jobs have been created versus 3.1 million people have gone on disability.
Exhibit B: The government now has the authority to tell us which healthcare plan is best for us (qualifies for tax credits) through a “regulated and competitive” (those terms appear contradictory) exchange controlled by government.
How will a candidate so consumed with making sure citizens are addicted to feeding at the government trough fix the economy and put Americans back to work?
Is he moving us in the right direction?
Does he give anyone hope?

Mike, I think you raise a good point. No one is talking about national security on this thread. Does anyone see it as an issue in this fall's election?
Just yesterday, firefighters in Cranberry Township held a golf tournament to raise money for a 9/11 memorial using a twisted piece of steel from the World Trade Towers.

"The world ... can never forget what they did here..."
Anyone know where that quote came from?

Or consider how national security and defense spending directly effects the economic crunch that we are experience. Subjects such as the FED and inflation tax. Is it possible that our economic situation is a direct result of extreme spending in the defense department? Are we too focused on welfare and social services while neglectiving criticism of our foreign spending? Comparing the numbers is enlightening.

@Erin – It’s good to have you back.
I think federal spending is absolutely an important topic. At this point in time, I think most citizens are more concerned with costs surrounding Obamacare/expansion of Medicaid. I think military/homeland security spending if off the radar due to the fact that we’re withdrawing troops from overseas and cutting the size of our military.
To your point,”Is it possible that our economic situation is a direct result of extreme spending in the defense department?” Despite your pejorative use of “extreme” the answer is yes and no. You could say yes because all government spending impacts our lives and therefore the economy. You could say no because in and by itself, defense spending is not the sole reason the economy is in its current situation.
Overriding all of this is the state of the economy, especially as it relates to unemployment.

Denny~youre a real genius with that over simplified and insulting analysis. Let's see if you're “smart“ enough to realize that when the incumbent President is dead even in the polls just 4 mos before the election and the job numbers and. unemployment are getting WORSE~Obama is in DEEP trouble and may actually be beaten by double digits. Besides I already know a handful of dems who are quietly planning to vote againt King Obama but don't want to say so for fear of being called a recist or face intimidation by their union thug leadership and the radical loud mouth liberals! What makes you think you are smarter then ANY human let alone people on this post? If you had a shred of common sense you'd knpw that the Dems were going to win in 08 no matter WHO ran. Good luck defending a looser in November. As for hose of you with the sales tax on homesales~wHAT PART of tax INCREASE ~dont yoou understand? I don't care what limits are on it its a BAD idea for the economy and housing market. Areas like California, Florida and other high priced reas already in trouble will be FURTHER hurt. @Mike Jones/Cindy – All politics is local. When people are out of work, their homes are being foreclosed upon, the government upholds a healthcare law that forever changes the relationship between government and citizens, and our politicians are quibbling over whether Romney bullied someone 30+ years ago or Obama agrees with Reverend Wright, homeland security is going to get lost in the mix.
By bringing up the topic, are you saying it should be the most important issue? If so, why?
Mike Jones
9:16 am on Friday, July 13, 2012
It was a pretty big topic in 2004 and 2008. National security isn't my No. 1 topic, but it's certainly in the Top 3. What's going to happen in Afghanistan, with our enormous embassy in Iraq, with the unspeakable violence in Syria, with the covert drone wars in Pakistan and Yemen? A president will be asked to do many things during his/her term. Why this isn't being discussed on this forum (or even on the national stage) is quite surprising to me.
Outraged Citizen
9:30 am on Friday, July 13, 2012
@Mike Jones – Barring anything catastrophic, I think you’re going to have to wait for the debates to hear anything substantive regarding defense/homeland security. It’s not that the topic is not important, it’s just not as important right now to those who are feeling the crunch of the current economic environment.
Another thought may be that the majority of citizens believe there is no discernible difference between the two on foreign policy.

"crunch of the current economic environment"
I've got a good job and my wife has a good job. In fact, I don't know anyone that is currently unemployed.
We own a house.

Things have improved since 2008.

@OC... I think you're right that people are more concerned about their pocketbooks than terrorism right now. I can't blame them for feeling that way. But it shouldn't be shut off from the discussion. As for there not being much of a difference about the two candidates, I haven't heard what Romney would do with Afghanistan (stay the course until 2014?) or with the drone war that is becoming an effective, albeit controversial tactic.

@Mike – I mean this with all sincerity, good for you. I also own a home, have a good job and save money for retirement. I’m also happy you don’t know anyone who is unemployed. I can’t say the same.
However, it is not even close to credible to say that our nation’s economy can be considered healthy. Unemployment (not to mention under employment) continues to remain very high and is one of key reasons many citizens are feeling an economic crunch.
In fact, a good number of economists believe that we shouldn’t expect to see a turnaround until 2014 to 2016. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/48072620/ns/business-stocks_and_economy/t/ap-survey-next-president-faces-high-unemployment/
You also have to consider the fact that states are cutting their workforces, cities are declaring bankruptcy and unfunded pension liabilities are going to do even more damage moving forward.
Let’s be honest here and admit something needs to be done to turn this around.
Outraged Citizen

@Mike Jones – I stated that people may believe there is no difference between the two on foreign policy. What any citizen could do proactively is go to Romney or Obama’s website and read what they say they’re going to do in Afghanistan, Pakistan and any other foreign policy issue that interests them.
As far as the candidates and the media focusing on the economy, it’s completely understandable.

I started googling info about voter fraud so I could be better informed of the facts. I found an interesting study by the Brennan Center for Justice at New York University School of Law, “The Truth About Voter Fraud."
http://www.truthaboutfraud.org/pdf/TruthAboutVoterFraud.pdf
Just throwing this out there as food for thought. I skimmed parts of the study but did not have time to read the whole thing. The Brennan Center website is:
http://www.truthaboutfraud.org
This is what is on its home page:
“Allegations of widespread fraud by malevolent voters are easy to make, but often prove to be inflated or inaccurate. Crying “wolf” when the claims are unsubstantiated distracts attention from real problems that need real solutions. Moreover, these claims are frequently used to justify policies – including restrictive photo identification rules – that could not solve the alleged wrongs, but that could well disenfranchise legitimate voters.
“The Brennan Center carefully examines allegations of fraud to get at the truth behind the claims.”
I was surprised to read that some things that are classified as voter fraud are actually mistakes or irregularities in the voting process, including the dissemination of misleading flyers about where polling places are located.
Interesting stuff. What do you think about the study?

Please expound by telling us eager readers, what exactly did Obama do that filled your wallet, stocked your bank account, got you into that home, assisted you in acquiring those two cars, helped book those vacations, fostered that comfortable lifestyle and ensured that dozens of friends and family have jobs?

Acorn was found GUILTY in the State of NEVADA and sentencing for ACORN will take place on August 10, 2012. in the State of Nevada for ACORN compensating voters registrations canvassers and for fraudulent or sloppy registration of voters. This is the first time that ACORN has been convicted of a crime and will be sentenced. In 2010 ACORN made a settlement on Racketeering Lawsuit in Ohio out of court settlement in which they had to cease all Ohio activities and surrender all of its state business licenses because of illegal voters registrations.

Mike its great you and you're friends are doing well. I'm not complaining about my personal situation much either but its selfish to use that as a measuring stick on how the country is doing. By EVERY SINGLE economic indicator you want to use, the Country is FAILING and getting WORSE! The last jobs report shows 69 and 80 thousand new jobs added the past two months when a MINIMUM of 250,000 per MONTH is needed to move the unemployment number down a fraction. Consumer confidence is at an 8 month LOW. Only 63% of Amricans are even LOOKING for work, a 31 year LOW. More people are on food stamps than EVER! @ Mike,
I notice that you have no source to back up your claims that the economy has improved since 2008. Funny that your attitude is "I'm doing better, so the whole economy is better." You have no facts to back up that claim. Just because there is more money in your pocket doesn't mean that is representative of the economy as a whole. You have been asked several times to back up the claim that "Obama saved the economy" yet posted nothing but attacks and self-serving diatribes.
On another note, I find it comical that you have to resort to pointing out grammatical mistakes and typos, since you have nothing to back up your claims.
How about next time just telling the truth. The economy has been good for YOU, regardless of how it has been for your neighbor, and you want more of the same. Nothing wrong with that, at least it would be factual. And honestly, when you start pointing out grammatical errors to try to insult, you really look foolish (if the rest of your posts didn't already do that). But don't enter a political debate, spouting inaccuracies without resources to back up your claims. You'll look like Erin Conners.

When have I pointed out my education except in response to people saying that my education is indoctrinating me and keeping me from "real life" wisdom. Come on now.
How is calling me a "hack" or a "career student" pointing out my hypocrisies?
When have I _ever_ posted a blog except when I posted a blog explaining the FED just as a laymen's introduction that was followed by wikipedia for people who like that source and a Scientific American article by a nationally renowned economist?
And blogs can be good sources of information. Many blogs have multiple hyperlinked sources within the body that leads to good info. Just as wikipedia will sometimes have their sources listed in a bibliography below the article which leads to excellent reading.
Show me one example of any of those accusations. One. I put a lot of time and research and thought into my responses. I make a special effort not to attack anyone on the basis of their personal lives. There is no reason why you guys should not be able to have these discussions without being "jerks." You want to talk about hypocrisy? Saying that you are not a bully who makes personal attacks and discourages others from participating and then using a metaphor which puts you in the position of the bully who is discouraging children from playing, is pretty much laughable.

“Take your ball and go home” has its roots in that as children we occasionally run into someone who is not happy with the way a game requiring a ball is being played. Rather than continue to play the game, this person ruins it for the rest of the group by taking their ball (the only one available to play the game) and going home.

I find what you write comical as you don't get to the point. You just write long winded things that could be said in a few sentences. But that is your writing, nothing wrong with it either.

Ever the victim, Erin? Trying to martyr yourself? No one is bullying anyone here, but I'm not surprised you turned it into that. The phrase "Take your ball and go home" refers to a petulant child that quits because they don't get their way, and I can't think of a more fitting phrase to sum up how you respond when people point out the flaws in what you bloviate.

Erin, don't worry, last comment to you. Here's a bit of advice. Every now and then, when you are proven wrong, it's okay to concede that someone has a better point than you. Really, it's okay. Just two examples where you could have done that without being "attacked" (ha) be me and others. You post that Romney didn't perform better in the debate, and really, whether you think the issued "debated" were worthy, that wasn't the entire point. You said that there was no winner. In a situation like that, just take the blinders off, and concede a point, for pete's sake. Is it THAT hard for you to do that? Clearly Obama was "outperformed" in that debate; you claiming that isn't true doesn't make it so. And the point above where you turned the whole thing into a "bullying" issue, you could have conceded that you didn't understand the phrase. Nowhere in your reply telling me to leave you alone did you acknowledge that you jumped the gun there. Wow. All that education and not a single original thought. As far as attacks go, I guess calling me a jerk wasn't personal? Yeah, clearly that wasn't personal. There is yet another example of you saying one thing and doing another, like saying that you aren't an Obama supporter (not one single person who has read your posts would believe that).

According to Romney 47% are dependent upon government, believe that they are victims, believe that government has a responsibility to care for them, believe that they are entitled to health care, to food, to housing, and to boot all, this 47% pays no taxes.
As Adam Sorensen reports in TIME,
When Mitt Romney told a group of wealthy donors that 47% of Americans pay no income taxes, he was (mostly) telling the truth. But everything else about his statement grossly misrepresents the reality of that figure.

Yes, 46% pay no additional money to the IRS at tax time, but many (most?) of them have already paid their income tax through withholding (payroll taxes). So that means that everyone who gets a refund is one of Romney's 47% (actually 46%). Along with seniors who have such small incomes that after deductions and credits, owe no income tax.

Obama: "You know, this is where budgets matter, because budgets reflect choices. So when Governor Romney indicates that he wants to cut taxes and potentially benefit folks like me and him, and to pay for it we're having to initiate significant cuts in federal support for education, that makes a difference."
Romney "Not the one we've been on, not the one the president describes as a top-down, cut taxes for the rich. That's not what I'm going to do."
Romney: " My view is that we ought to provide tax relief to people in the middle class. But I'm not going to reduce the share of taxes paid by high-income people. High-income people are doing just fine in this economy. "
Romney: "The second area, taxation, we agree, we ought to bring the tax rates down. And I do, both for corporations and for individuals. But in order for us not to lose revenue, have the government run out of money, I also lower deductions and credits and exemptions, so that we keep taking in the same money when you also account for growth."
As far as corporate taxes go he has talked about lowering to 25%. I believe it is at 35%. Obama has offered to lower to 28%. More to the point....Obama and Romney are the same. Obama has also talked about lower exemptions which he refers to as "loopholes" but Obama says it, the right wing goes nuts on the word "loophole." People...as far as taxes, they are the same!

Did you even listen to the debate? He said that there are cuts, that are off-set by the elimination of deductions. The discrepency is whether the elimination of deductions will truely offset the cuts. Obama is assuming there will be $zero dollars offset so he is using the full 5 Billion. Romney is saying he will offset the whole thing, or will only implement the amount that he can offset. This isn't any different from what Romney has said from day one, or has had clearly spelled out on his website for months.
My guess is it is somewhere between zero and $5 Trillion. CNN calculated it out and said the $5 Trillion is wrong.
Don't believe all the left wing spin little girl. No one has yet to confirm the $5 Trillion het except the Obama campain.

Erin--do you know now many major corporations pay $0 in taxes or close to it? Quite a few. By lowering the rate from 35 to 25 percent and completely eliminating the deductions or loop holes, you are actually raising the next tax rate or revenue coming in. but for it to work it needs to be across the board. No exceptions for cetain "favored" industries on either side.

"little girl?" Someone is upset that they were called out on the Romney quote. Don't stoop.
Good Lord. They are both proposing the same corporate tax cut. They are both proposing to close the same loopholes. Maybe the only difference you can find is that Romney wants to continue the tax cut on higher income which he artfully tried to dodge in the debate by saying he is not going to cut taxes. Spin. Obama wants to discontinue the tax cut on higher income. They are virtually the same, the tax revenues really matter for very little considering the deficit and spending.
There was absolutely no call for the "little girl" statement. Would you have conducted yourself in the same way had a 29 year old woman been standing directly in front of you having this conversation? If you had I can guarantee this conversation would have gone no further. It is certainly ironic when someone resorting to name calling uses terms like "little girl" in their efforts to belittle. Name calling is immature right? And "little girls" are biologically immature, correct? There's your irony.
You accused someone of misquoting when they did not while implementing your own spin on the really awful comments that Romney made. What is that term people throw around on here? Apologist? Low income does not mean dependent on the government. We all believe we pay too much in taxes, correct? Are we all entitled and irresponsible feeding at the government trough?

Politifact says
President Obama said Mitt Romney seeks a $5 trillion tax cut.
The $5 trillion figure accounts for only half of Romney’s plan -- and it's cumulative over 10 years. The governor says he will offset those lost revenues by reducing tax deductions and eliminating loopholes. However, he has never said what those changes would be.

I just want to state an opinion. All this talk about birth certificates and bullying could not be more irrelevant to the major issue at hand. What is America's overall economic outlook? I have not heard one utterance of the upcoming Fiscal Cliff. Not one reference to the European crisis. The American economy has some pretty serious issues to contend with. It's not just if YOU personally are doing better than you were in 2008. It's not about if "Joe on Dormont Avenue" has a job. I encourage the readers of this post to look beyond their front door this November. Please research the economic challenges that we as a country face. I won't bother pointing you to a website for this research, as I will be pilloried by both conservatives and liberals as posting a biased source. Google "Fiscal Cliff" for yourselves. It is very real. Our economy has to be the most important issue in this election, or the subsequent elections may look VERY differently.
Oh, and Mike, sorry if there are any typos in this rant. I realize that a typo totally negates anything of substance in a post...

Erin you are missing one HUGE difference between these candidates. One is promising to do things and the other HAS HAD four years to DO IT and has FAILED!
Watching Obama the other night was like a rerun WITHOUT the enthusiasm. The man couldn't even get himself excited enough to look at his opponent or call ROmney out IF he truly thought Romney was lying!!! Princeton University JUSt came out with a study that BACKS the ROmney tax plan and says it is indeed possible to lower taxes across the board and by eliminating loopholes it would NOT add to the deficit. The ENTIEE Obama campaign has come down to them calling Romney a liar--how pathetic! as Romeny correctly pointed out during the debate--the President has been saying these things for 4 years and has failed to come thru. He promised to cut the deficit in HALF in his first tierm but has INCREASED it by over 5 TRILLION DOLLARS.. Wasn't THAT a lie? How about LYING about some asinine video causing the embassy attacks? Or lying about Romney causing the death of an employee of a company Bain took over? Stephanie Cutter the Obama campaign guru DENIED ever knowing the diagnosis and death occurered two years AFTER she was let go by the company. We ALL later heard the man talking to Cutter in a taped phone call AND HE TOLD HER IT WAS TWO YEARS LATER!! Talk about liars? This entire past four years has been NOTHING BUT A LIE! Roney WILL WIN - Americans are tired of the Obama failure!

Obama's failures are due in a large part to the obstructionist republicans in the house. If Obama says the sky is blue, they say it's purple. They've blocked jobs bills just so he looks bad. With republicans, it's party first, country second... no matter the cost. Mitch McConnell's direct quote..."my number one priority is making sure president Obama’s a one-term president." This after the republicans drove this country into a ditch.

obamas first two years in office he had both the house and senate with a democratic majority and yet what did he do, nothing. once again a democrat gets it so wrong but then lies and tries to blame everyone else. if obama gets elected again he can blame the economy on the last administration and to find that all he will have to do is look in the mirror. I'm surprised that obama hasn't blamed George Washington and the rest of the Presidents of the United States. obama, when they write about him 20 years from now is going to be known as the only president that ever had our rating drop because he is a do nothing president just like carter.

Obama had 2 years of COMPLETE control shoving junk down the throats of every American, even when overwhelming response was we DIDN'T WANT IT. And when we equalized it in the house and congress, he refused to compromise... and slithered into executive orders.

The fact is not ONE Democrat has ever voted for any Obama budget and Obama intentionally left the republicans OUT of his plans so he could blame them for his failures. Obstructionism is a real, nonpartisan problem in our government. It is not an apologist argument made up by the left wing.
Ohio Republican Rep Steven Latourette:
“There are people on the right and the left who think that if you compromise you’re a coward, you’re a facilitator, you’re an appeaser,” he said, adding that “people are more interested in fighting with each other than they are in getting the no-brainers done and governing.”

More budget stuff. Click on the link to the right for the whole paper by the Brookings Institute. Quote is from the abstract to the paper.
"Even with the economy recovering fully by 2018, as projected by CBO, a path following current policy with respect to taxes and spending (for example, by making the Bush tax cuts permanent and indexing the alternative minimum tax for inflation) will result in deficits close to $10 trillion (5 percent of GDP) over the next decade, with the debt-to-GDP ratio nearing 90 percent by 2022 and continuing to rise thereafter."

More evidence of obstructionism in a failing congress and how Obama responded:
"The biggest recent change in the policy and economic environment results from the budget deal that President Obama signed into law on August 2, 2011 (Pub. L. No. 112-25). The Budget Control Act of 2011 reduces the deficit in two phases. First, discretionary spending caps and program integrity initiatives reduce the deficit by a cumulative amount of $895 billion over ten years (CBO 2011b). Second, automatic enforcement procedures, including sequestration and lower discretionary spending caps, will reduce the 10-year deficit by an additional approximately $1.0 trillion (CBO 2012a). The automatic cuts became effective because a bipartisan Joint Select Committee on Deficit Reduction created by the debt deal was unable to reach agreement last year on alternative ways to reduce the deficit."
From the Brookings paper linked above.

And it goes onto to say that CBO's predictions are based on congress doing "basically nothing" meaning that things like the tax cuts with expiration dates _will_ expire. This seems like an important thing to consider when quoting the CBO.
N/A
1:03 pm on Tuesday, October 9, 2012
Ok, I have read the whole paper now. There are charts at the bottom which are helpful but it is important to know the distinction between the 3 budgets analyzed: CBO Baseline, Extended Policy, and Obama Admin Budget.
CBO: Looks like they operate based on "current law" which means that tax cuts set to expire will expire. It also goes along with the Budget Control Act which phase two will probably not happen. It was more of a threat to congress when they refused to pass a budget. Mandatory expending is assumed to continue (TARP was considered mandatory spending).
Extended Policy: Current spending and tax cuts are assumed to be extended.
Obama: Example includes his defense spending which cuts Overseas Contingency Spending (eg: spending in Afghanistan) and raises core defense spending by a little bit (5 billion in comparison with cut of around 45 billion to overseas).
The CBO shows the greatest reduction to the deficit, Obama is in the middle, and extended policy is the worst.
Wouldn't it be great if we could put Romney's plan against this? We cannot effectively bc we do not know exactly what to figure in as far as tax cuts and spending cuts etc. The Bush Era tax cuts did affect all household incomes. Romney wants to extend these permanently plus increase cuts across the board. Obama wants to continue tax cuts for household incomes less than 250,000/yr. You decide where that fits in.
