Hundreds of Pittsburghers successively broke the world's 3-meter doggypaddle record on New Year's Day after braving 36-degree temperatures to jump into the Monongahela River.

And nearly 30 of those record-breakers were community leaders and volunteers from Brentwood, Baldwin and Whitehall boroughs.

The Brentwood-Baldwin-Whitehall folks, headed by John F. Slater—owner of the John F. Slater Funeral Home in Brentwood and the board chair of Economic Development South—accepted sponsorships of varying amounts to make good on their promise of arctic swimming.

All told, over $4,000 were raised to be split between Economic Development South (EDS), the Brentwood-Baldwin-Whitehall Chamber of Commerce, the Brentwood Business Owners Association and the Brentwood Park Initiative.

Swimmers included Slater, Whitehall Councilman Robert McKown, local dentist Frank Cappetta, Legacy Lanes co-owner Jennie Schultz, EDS Executive Director Greg Jones and many others.

The money will go toward supporting development projects in the three municipalities that are affiliated in some way with the four represented groups.

Watch the video found in the media gallery above to enjoy Tuesday's arctic dip—from the warm glow of your computer screen.

Looks like it was a lot of fun, I wanted to try to do that but things didn't work out this year. Maybe next year.

Wonderful story and video Robert. Glad to see you took the plunge also. Will help EDS and their grass roots campaign.

Bob, thanks for being a good sport. And thanks for the video. All involved had a great time . . . we hope to see everyone next year. On behalf of the BPI, BBOA, BBW Chamber, and EDS, thanks. John Slater
