Some Murphy Charges Withdrawn; Most Held for County Court
William Murphy remains charged with an array of south Baldwin crimes.
District Magistrate John N. Bova granted the withdrawal of three charges against William Joseph Murphy III at a preliminary hearing at Bova's Wallace Building office on Tuesday.
Withdrawn were both charges of receiving stolen property and one charge of the illegal sale or transfer of firearms, all stemming from a Jan. 4 incident in Baldwin Borough. But also from that incident, one charge each of burglary and trespassing have been waived for Allegheny County Court, where Murphy is scheduled to appear for a formal arraignment on March 18.
Likewise, one charge each of trespassing and burglary from a Jan. 16 incident in Baldwin have been waived for county court on March 18.
In addition, 28 other Baldwin charges against Murphy—all since Oct. 1 at the earliest—were held by Bova for Murphy's March 18 appearance in county court.
Included in that are eight counts of burglary, 10 counts of theft and 10 counts of receiving stolen property.
Murphy remains in the Allegheny County Jail on $50,000 bail.

Hey Bob, can you find out from Chief Scott why these charges have been dropped? I am not sure if this exactly correct, however I heard that the police recovered the gun that he said he claimed to have sold and it had not been sold after all. My friend is attorney, they mentioned if Murphy would have the opportunity to plead guilty to these less serious charges, then the more serious charge (burglary) would not able be able to be brought because of double jeopardy.

We can only speculate as to why some charges were withdrawn. The chief would have nothing to do with it, though. Most likely, a representative from the district attorney's office did not see enough evidence to follow through. Either that or there is some game-planning going on.
