Should Congress Enact Tougher Gun Laws?
A shooting in Aurora, CO, last week raises questions about gun laws for armor-piercing bullets, magazines and assault weapons.
In the wake of a theater shooting in Aurora, CO, some officials are calling again for tougher gun laws.
Baltimore County, MD, police Chief James Johnson and other law enforcement officers spoke at The National Press Club this week, supporting the notion that a high-capacity magazine like one used in the Aurora shooting "simply has no place in civilian hands," according to an article in the Los Angeles Times.
"It is ridiculous to argue that hunters or civilians who own weapons for self-defense need a 100-round drum magazine," Johnson said in the LA Times. "As we have seen, people don't stand a chance against this kind of firepower."
Police say that the weapons and ammunition used by Aurora shooting suspect James E. Holmes were legally purchased.
Some officials are pushing for background checks, and New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg said earlier this week that police officers across the nation should threaten to go "on strike" to press for more restrictions on armor-piercing bullets. Later, Bloomberg backed off of that statement somewhat, noting that police in New York are not permitted to strike.
Legislation targeting ammunition magazines that can hold more than 10 rounds was introduced after the shooting of then-Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-Arizona) in Tucson in 2011, but the measure has languished for more than a year in Congress.
Take our poll. Should Congress enact tougher gun laws to prevent citizens from owning assault weapons, armor-piercing bullets or high-capacity magazines?

You can take all the guns away in the whole world and UNSTABLE, jealous, or anybody that has no self control and the list goes on, will still kill. Every day President Obama and the communists that are following him are trying to take our freedoms away. Criminals don't follow our laws. Do you really think just because they outlaw guns, the criminal will turn his in? Some say that we the people don't need assault weapons. If I want to have an assault weapon and use it legally why not. That is what freedom is. If you could ask the land owners and farms when the British tried to govern them I wonder what they would say?

Ya.....disarm us all.......great idea. Don't forget......the criminals will always have guns and know everyone else has no way of defending themselves against them. The attack in the theater is tragic but you cannot disarm the citizens of this country because of it.

May I recommend a trip to 'Darwin Awards.com'? There are a lot of life lessons there. I remember reading about someone walking past a parked police car as he entered a sporting goods store and, firing two shots into the ceiling, he announced: "This is a hold-up"!
The startled store owner and the policeman were at the cash register and they turned just in time to see two store patrons shoot the robber to death; thus successfully removing him from the gene pool.
The difference between this event and the event at the theater in Colorado is:
Who survived?
Now, you need to ask yourself:
Why?

Well Tom I'm all for everybody owning a gun...and I'm "a liberal democrat" who owns about 10 of them....and they can pry them out of my cold dead hands.....now the truth being when asked about changing any gun laws after what happened in Aurora, Pres. Obama said there was no need to change the gun laws....just another election season smoke screen by NRA nuts and GOP'ers......every election is the same thing....the 3 G's...God, Gays and Guns....and as in the past after the election you wont hear a word for the next 4 years!!

Back on 7/7/2011 after the shooting of Gabrielle Giffords, the obama administration tried to release a series of reforms to the current gun laws. obama couldn't get any of his reforms passed the House of Representatives. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/07/07/obama-unveil-gun-control-reforms_n_892633.html This isn't the first time obama since he took office has tried to take away our 2nd Amendment rights.

Why not just ENFORCE the gun laws that are already on the books? MY RIGHT to keep and bears arms should not be infringed apon because of a madman. This is like saying because a careless jerk drives drunk and kills someone the state take my truck or your car away?

Chris I agree. Like Margaret said you can leave a gun sit on a table and no one touches it and it isn't a deadly weapon. Let a madman touch it and you have killings. Most of the killing in Pittsburgh that they do get the guns for are from people that aren't licensed nor do they have permit to carry concealed weapon.

Jon your comment doesn't make sense. I am saying PUNISH the offenders to the fullest extent of the law. SHOW the public that their actions will be met with a swift, just, response.
