Samuel McPherson, who most recently lived in Whitehall Borough, died unexpectedly at the age of 81 on Wednesday, according to his obituary published by the Jefferson Memorial Cemetery and Funeral Home. A cause of death was not given.
McPherson was a longtime resident of Baldwin Borough, having served in the roles of borough mayor, councilman, committeeman and democratic chairman there. He was also an honorary member of the South Baldwin Volunteer Fire Company.
McPherson was also a member of Steamfitters Local Union No. 449 for over 55 years and was employed with the Power Piping Company of Etna Borough for over 50 years, serving as a steamfitter, project manager and part-owner.
According to the obituary, McPherson enjoyed spending time with family and friends at his vacation home near Conneaut Lake, and he was known for "his strong love for family, friends and community."
McPherson was married to Peggy (Coghill) McPherson for 60 years and was the father of Susan (Chuck) Willis, Sam McPherson Jr., Lynn (John) Calgelia, Tom (Jean) McPherson, David McPherson, Joan (Rob) Hess, Carol (Russ) Westerman and Bob (Lori) McPherson.
He was also a grandfather to 24 people and a great-grandfather to 30 more.
Visitation will be held this Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 22-23, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the Jefferson Memorial Funeral Home, 301 Curry Hollow Rd., Pleasant Hills Borough, PA 15236.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, Sept. 24, at 10 a.m. at St. Gabriel of the Sorrowful Virgin Church, 5200 Greenridge Dr., Whitehall, 15236.
Interment will be at the Jefferson Memorial Cemetery.
Donations may be made to the Abundant Life Ministry Center, 540 Delwar Rd., West Mifflin Borough, PA 15236.
