Port Authority Fare Increases Start July 1

Baldwin-Whitehall riders beware.

Baldwin-Whitehall residents will be paying more to ride the bus next month.

Starting July 1, increases go into effect on most Port Authority of Allegheny County fares, including cash fares for full-fare and half-fare riders, all tickets and passes.

According to a news release, the fare increases are required to balance Port Authority's budget for the fiscal year of 2013, which begins on July 1.

The base one-zone cash fare will increase by $0.25 from $2.25 to $2.50 one way. Two-zone rides will increase by $0.50 from $3.25 to $3.75 one way.

Additionally, fare changes will go into effect for ACCESS riders that same day.

Full information on fares, including instructions on exchanging tickets, is available here. The Port Authority Customer Service Center can also be reached at 412-442-2000. For the speech- and hearing-impaired (TTY), call 412-231-7007.

Well there isn't bus service in north Baldwin. I drive to Overbook to take the T, and I know of quite a few other Baldwin residents who do the same. Today there was a sign at the Southbank T stop stating that they are considering the streets near the T stop to be permit parking only. It's getting very difficult to take public transportation.

I've seen buses on Churchview and on Brownsville Road, is that not North Baldwin?

There are no buses that run on Churchveiw anymore, that were cancelled over a year ago if not more. There is a bus that runs up brownsville through brentwood and then turns onto 51.

I moved here from the East side of Pittsburgh. Learned there is no bus service where I live now anywhere near Crestline Drive. Very disappointing, since I rely on public transportation and am unable to walk distances at all. Seems that all neighborhood buses are being discontinued, which is very, very sad. Those who work locally need to get to work and walking along the dangerous roadways with no sidewalks is not safe, let alone if one is older or who may have a disability or both. For Pittsburgh to be a livable city, we need viable transportation to shopping, medical and community businesses.

I agree Susan, in order to be a "livable city", viable transportation is important. @Jean Smith.- Christina is correct, there are no buses that run on Churchview anymore, since March of 2011. If you don't believe me, look at Port Authority's website, I wouldn't make that up. Yes, I have also seen buses on Churchview, Joseph, and Glass Run Road (out of service), they are all going to the garage in West Mifflin. Funny how they can use those streets as a route to the garage, but not a bus route. Where I live, it's a 30 minute walk uphill each way to Brownsville Road. lol Kind of hard to do in work clothes, in bad weather, or if you are elderly. There are people that rode the Spencer/Churchview bus that live farther than me to Brownsville Road. When they cut the route, they told us our alternative was to take the Carrick bus. Now when I go to the Port Authority website, it tells me that there isn't bus service in my area. But that's ok, people can't get to/from work, but you can get to the casino and the stiller games, and that's all that matters.
