PHOTOS: Are You 'Raising the Jolly Roger' in Baldwin-Whitehall?

In the middle of a bona fide pennant race, we're seeing quite a few skull-and-crossbones flags around the district. Show us your colors here!

As someone who cried himself to sleep as a 9-year-old after watching Sid Bream send the Pittsburgh Pirates on to 19 straight years of losing, seeing my beloved Buccos in the thick of a pennant race in 2012 feels like a dream.

And I've been celebrating in a truly "Pirates" way.

I—like many of my Baldwin-Whitehall neighbors, apparently—have been "raising the Jolly Roger" after each and every Pirates win this season, taking a victory call by Pirates announcer Greg Brown to heart.

I know that I'm not the only one hoisting skull-and-crossbones flags in Baldwin Borough, Whitehall Borough or Baldwin Township, because I've seen those babies all around our district.

To get the ball rolling here, I've uploaded a picture of me "raising the Jolly Roger" earlier this season at my home in south Baldwin. (As my wife asked then, "Have you ever looked happier?")

Show us your Pirates flags—non-Jolly Rogers are OK, too—by clicking on "Upload Photos and Videos" above. In the photo caption, tell us in which municipality that your flag is. (Flags from Brentwood and Pleasant Hills boroughs—and anywhere nearby—are cool with us, too.)

While I am thrilled that the Pirates are doing well and that we all are out here supporting them in every way and raising this flag ...... for all of those people out there who will be raising the jolly roger and the Penguins flags, Steelers flag, the cute little flags that people put out year round --- the one flag that I would like to see out, especially on our country's special days (Flag Day, July 4th, Veteran's Day, etc.) is our American flag.

On those days our nation celebrates our independence, etc. Please put your American stars and stripes out. Thank you.

As a retired Navy Captain, I put out an American Flag every Morning and take it down at Sunset. One of my peeves is seeing people flying the American Flag that is ripped and frayed. They do a Flag burning out in South Park every year for flags that are tattered needs to be retired. When a Veteran ask you to take down a tattered Flag, please don't look at us like were crazy. We fought for your freedom and please show us some consideration.

The United States Flag: Federal Law www.senate.gov/reference/resources/pdf/RL30243.pdf

United States Flag Codes state: "The flag, when it is in such condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem for display, should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning."

The act is silent on procedures for burning a flag. It would seem that any procedure which is in good taste and shows no disrespect to the flag would be appropriate. The Flag Protection Act of 1989, struck down albeit on grounds unrelated to this specific point, prohibited inter alia “knowingly” burning of a flag of the United States, but excepted from prohibition “any conduct consisting of disposal of a flag when it has become worn or soiled.

I follow Military traditions put my flag up in the morning and down at sunset. I don't fly it in the rain and on gloomy days. My neighbors would get mad if I ran flood lights on a flag 24/7 since a spot light doesn't cut it. Besides there are Eight Places in the United States where flags should be flown 24/7
Fort Henry National Monument and Historic Shrine,
On the green in Lexington, Massachusetts
The White House,
The Washington Monument,
United States Custom Ports of Entry,
United States Marine Corps Memorial,
Flag House Square
National Memorial Arch in Valley Forge, PA

Been to all of them and they have Flood Lights on the Flag that you can see our Flag 2 blocks away.

If a Flag is displayed at night, the flag must be properly illuminated. Proper illumination means that the stars and stripes can be seen readily from a reasonable distance.

Most people that fly their flag at night do not have proper lights for them. You should be able to see the flag as clearly as you see it in the day. They make flag poles now that have flood lights built in so that you can see a flag clearly., but are very expensive to purchase and have installed.
