New Football Coach for Baldwin-Whitehall on Wednesday

The school board will make its decision that night. Candidates' names have not been revealed.

Less than one month after accepting the resignation of Jim Wehner as the head coach of the Baldwin High School football program, the Baldwin-Whitehall School Board is scheduled to hire a new head coach at its meeting on Wednesday night.

The meeting will start at 7:30 p.m. at the Baldwin-Whitehall School District Office along Curry Road in Whitehall Borough.

It is not known if the new coach will assume Wehner's duties stemming from his Personal Fitness position at the high school. That position was taken from Wehner by the school board on Jan. 16 along with declaring all of the football coaching positions in the school district as open.

The open positions include all of those at Baldwin High (varsity, junior varsity and ninth-grade teams) and at J.E. Harrison Middle School.

The names of the candidates to replace Wehner have not been made public, but those coaches removed from their positions in January—Wehner's assistants and coaches at J.E. Harrison—are eligible to become the new high school head coach or to even regain their old positions.

Baldwin's varsity team did not post a winning season during Wehner's four years as its head coach, but the 2012 Highlanders were the first of Wehner's varsity squads to not win more games than they did in their previous season.

Baldwin finished 2012 at 3-6 overall—one game worse than its 4-5 mark in 2011. In 2010, Baldwin was also 3-6, but that was after a 2-8 mark in 2009 (Wehner's first season with the team) and after a 0-9 record in 2008.

Also on Wednesday, the school board will name an interim principal for Baldwin High. Baldwin Principal Kevin O'Toole was granted a leave of absence in January.

O'Toole's leave—district administration has not divulged the reason for it—is expected to last for the entire spring semester. (UPDATE: "No Interim Principal Yet at Baldwin High School")

I don't think Voelker got a second interview so I wouldn't think he'll be on tonight's agenda.

The rumors I am hearing today is that Perry or Wagner will be voted on tonight.

I can only hope that by the grace of Vince Sortino's V formation style shorts, our next head coach will be our last head coach for at least 2 years....

My son played for the Freshman team last season and his friends are frequently at my house, I can say without question that they are pulling for Coach Wagner to get the job. Good luck tonight Mr. Wagner!

I have heard that the kids are showing up and working hard for him in the weightroom and that numbers are up.

Combine that with him in the building and that will give him an edge.

It all goes on what the quarterback's parents want. They always seem to get what they want. They want Perry - so it will be Perry. We can only hope someone on the board wises up.

Baldwin Alumni, I think you are out of your mind. The parents didn't have a say in who got the job. Sortino and Perry know each other and he was the best experienced candidate they interviewed.

Wagner was voted in 6-3 after Perry was voted down 5-4.

I haven't seen this happen before when a board votes on a 2nd candidate. I wonder how that all played out in the board meeting.

Sorry, but this is a HUGE mistake! Talk about a handout??? Pete has never called an offensive play in the past 4 years, what he did do in that time was undercut Wehner (not defending Wehner) so that he could set himself up for this position. What a travesty! Baldwin will get destroyed by much, much more competent coaches in this section. Brace yourself for reality Coach Wagner, your about to get schooled. Nepotism is not considered a qualification to be a head football coach, maybe a dean of students. I see maybe two wins, depending on who ends up coaching Canon Mac and Plum. It sure seems like the school is not too sure either with only 6 votes, not a lot of confidence there.

Greg Perry would have been a Great choice. Ck out how many kids from Seton La salle he has helped get scholarships. He definitely can coach QB's. He is a coach that I would have liked my son to play for.
