Police believe that a subcontractor is responsible for a series of burglaries at a Whitehall Place Apartments building in July, Whitehall Borough police Chief Donald R. Dolfi said on Tuesday.
The four burglaries occurred between July 9 and July 29, all in apartments at 1725 Skyline Dr.
Dolfi credited Whitehall police officer Brett Newbould for "taking the lead" on the case. Newbould observed that, in each of the four burglaries, no forced entry was needed to steal from the victims.
Newbould, with assistance from Whitehall Place management, interviewed Whitehall Place employees and subcontractors regarding the burglaries, in which approximately $4,000 in goods and cash were stolen. Among the goods taken were jewelry and electronic items.
Newbould also talked with the victims and other Whitehall Place residents, as well as an Ohio Township police detective who was able to locate jewelry from a July 9 burglary that was sold at an Ohio Township-area pawnshop.
One of the burglary victims was able to identify the jewelry, Dolfi said, and the man who sold it to the pawn shop was Jonathan Michael Kalb, 28, of 1703 Roosevelt Rd. in Ohio Township—an employee of a company under contract to do work for Whitehall Place.
Dolfi said that Kalb's company was "cooperative" with police during their investigation. He would not name the company but said that Kalb was "trusted" with master keys.
When approached with information linking him to the burglaries, Kalb admitted to committing the crimes, Dolfi said. He is being charged with four counts each of burglary and theft.
Dolfi said that Newbould, who has been with Whitehall police for three years, was "very tenacious" in solving the case.
"That's a kudos," Dolfi said. "That's a big deal."

Officer Newbould is a great cop. He was instrumental in cracking the case of the Baldwin High student thugs who burglarized the South Hills Country Club. He worked hard as did the others on this case. All that hard work and you would think the thugs would have gotten a punishment for burglarizing the country club to finance their senior trip to Ocean City.
But keep up the great work Officer Newbould and the others who worked so hard. Maybe someday the thugs will be punished.
