Local Grocer Slashing Prices on 3,000 Items
Some of the reductions went into effect on Wednesday.
Giant Eagle said Wednesday its delivering more than $70 million in annual customer savings by lowering prices on more than 3,000 grocery items about 15 percent, according to WPXI.
The majority of lower everyday prices went in effect Wednesday, with the remaining reductions taking place by April 11.
The lowered everyday prices are on a variety of national and Giant Eagle brand dairy, frozen food and processed meat products, as well as grocery items such as cereal, yogurt, condiments, pastas, boxed dinners, canned vegetables, and paper and laundry products. Some of the items include Cheerios, Hellmann’s Mayonnaise, Kraft Macaroni and Cheese, Cool Whip, and more, according to KDKA.
Giant Eagle customers can identify the savings with yellow “New Lower Price” tags located throughout the store.
The new price cuts will not replace other established offers, such as double coupons up to 99 cents or gas discounts, according to the Post-Gazette.
Giant Eagle is also strengthening its hunger relief efforts throughout the communities it serves by donating an additional 500,000 meals to regional food banks.
A Giant Eagle is located at 5260 Grove Rd.

Too little too late. Bottom dollar proves to people how bad Giant eagle has been taking advantage of consumers. The price of bananas was double at Giant eagle than Bottom dollar yesterday.

I have not stepped foot in a Giant Eagle since 1/1/2012 as part of a new year's resolution to boycott their outrageous prices. I still won't go there but I would advise those who do to be more price conscience because I'll bet that even with the price reductions, their prices are still too high. You have choices people!

Giant Eagle is my LAST choice for groceries! ALDI for 90% of what I need and Shop N Save for those few certain things I can't get at Aldi. Even the fuel perks don't make it worthwhile to shop at Giant Eagle!

One place that really whips the Iggle is McGinnis Sisters. Buy a head of lettuce from McGinnis Sisters and it stays nice for a week or more. Buy one from Big Bird and watch it rot in 48 hours because they truck all of their produce in from Guatemala, etc. BUY LOCAL!!!

Shop N Save Produce in Bethel Park last longer than what you purchase in Giant Eagles.

Unfortunately, GE has several items that I cannot find elsewhere. But aside from those few items, I prefer Aldi's and Bottom Dollar.

FYI Lettuce is not grown locally. This time of year it is coming from Arizona and the crops have been terrible because of the wet cold weather. Produce is grown in different regions depending on the time of year. Local produce is only available in the summer time.

Lettuce grows best in cooler wet weather. With all we have heard about lettuce and spinach lately and people getting sick, I grow my own. I don't care if I can't grow it in winter since I don't care much for either one anyway.

Cold and wet in Pittsburgh is much different than cold and wet in Arizona. Cold in Arizona is freezing or below freezing and excessive rain. I buy produce for a living and this winter has been the worst in years for lettuce.

JC, is that true for all greens or just the iceberg lettuce? We prefer spinach, arugula, spring mixes.

It has been a bad year for all green leafy products grown in the United States.

When Giant Eagles brought in Fuel Perks, the prices went up and up in the Grocery Store. I haven't shopped in a Giant Eagles in years.

All greens are grown in different regions depending on the time of year. Excessive rain hampers the picking of the greens when they are ready to be picked.
Some mixed greens and arugula are grown indoors hydroponically. Almost all bibb lettuce is grown indoors.
