The Baldwin-Whitehall Patch threw a pizza party for the AFC championship game at a Borough of Whitehall home on Jan. 23, and the Steelers weren't the night's only winners.
The host of the party was the B-W Patch's very own food expert in Roseann Vamos, who came away very full and very satisfied. "Really, everything was good," Vamos said. "I just liked some more than others."
Vamos was referring to the B-W Patch's first-ever Football Party Pizza Challenge, which pitted area pizza shops against each other. Vamos and six others participated as food judges in the challenge.
The B-W Patch asked seven area shops to participate in the challenge and received four positive responses. Little Caesars in Caste Village on Grove Road, Mm! Mm! Pizza on Route 51, Italian Village Pizza on Route 51 and Fox's Pizza Den on Radford Road felt confident enough to participate and were kind enough to donate at least one of what they thought to be their best type of pizza for the contest.
Each shop had to provide a pepperoni and plain version of their top pizza, and sure enough, each category had a different winner.
This author created a points system to determine the winners. Each tester's top pizza vote received four points, while his/her second-place pizza received three points (and so on).
The winner in the pepperoni category (and highest individual points-getter) was Little Caesars' regular pepperoni pie (known as the Hot-N-Ready Pizza).
The winner in the plain category was Mm! Mm! Pizza's regular pie. Mm! Mm!’s plain pizza fell one point shy of Little Caesars' overall winner. However, Mm! Mm! Pizza’s combined pepperoni and plain total was the highest for any shop.
This author did not participate as a tester, as the identities of the pizzas were not revealed until the challenge was over.
Some of the comments on Little Caesars' winning pepperoni pie were as follows.
“The pepperoni tastes fresh,” said one tester, “and it had the right amount of spice.”
Added Vamos about that particular pie, “I love this one, pepperoni included.”
Mm! Mm! Pizza’s plain pie, the ever-so-close overall runner-up but winner of the plain category, drew the following praise.
“My favorite. Enough cheese, sauce and crust,” said one tester.
Added another, “I thought that it tasted sweet. Good crust and spice.”
It should be duly noted that the reactions to each pizza were positive, another indicator of each participating shop’s confidence in their products.
Special thanks again to Little Caesars, Mm! Mm! Pizza, Italian Village Pizza and Fox’s Pizza Den, each of whom made a select group of seven Steelers fans’ AFC championship experience even more super than it already was.
Little Caesars and Mm! Mm! Pizza will be presented with winning certificates in the near future.
Notes: Fox’s Pizza Den provided its rectangular Big Daddy pizza in a special new box. Italian Village Pizza provided its regular (yet tasty) option. Little Caesars also provided the B-W Patch with a Deep Dish option, thought it was not used in the contest. The Deep Dish also drew positive reviews. Since the Deep Dish pie comes with Crazy Bread and Crazy Sauce, the challenge’s testers enjoyed those as well after the contest had concluded.
