Cancer never hits a family easily, but in the case of the Duttine family, of Whitehall Borough, the disease has been especially rough.
Jaden Duttine, son of Joseph and Julie (Andrulonis) Duttine, was diagnosed with cancer at the age of 2. Jaden has since turned 4 and is doing better, but he is still not out of the woods.
And mother Julie, at the age of 36, who fought cancer alongside her son for two years and for much longer overall, died from the disease on Wednesday, Dec. 7.
Joseph, Jaden and Jaden's older brother, Joey, continue to live on, but battling cancer on two fronts has been very costly for the family.
The Baldwin-Whitehall community and neighbors from surrounding areas gathered two years ago for a fundraiser for the Duttines, and on Sunday, Dec. 18, Saint Elizabeth of Hungary Roman Catholic Parish along Route 51 in Baldwin Borough will host another fundraiser for the family—"Wrapped with Love"—from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
Alumni and current students from Saint Elizabeth School will wrap gifts after Masses that day in the school cafeteria, which can be accessed from the Saint Elizabeth Church parking lot. Attendees are asked to bring gifts (in boxes, please) to have them wrapped for Christmas.
The wrappers are asking for a donation to the Duttines of any amount in return.
Those interested in attending who need more information should contact Sam Doyle, who is helping to organize the event, at 412-885-3779.
