Nearby: Fire at Irvin Works in West Mifflin

Possible hazmat situation as heavy black smoke fills the air about U.S. Steel's facility on Camp Hollow Road on Sunday afternoon.

A fire broke out at U.S. Steel's Irvin Works on Camp Hill Road in West Mifflin Borough at around noon on Sunday, filling the air with heavy, black smoke.

Early reports noted that acid containers might have exploded, possibly creating a hazardous situation at the scene. The smoke was visible from neighboring communities, including Glassport Borough, where one family reported a chemical smell in the air.

WTAE is reporting that there were no injuries. Area fire departments were put on standby but, according to WTAE, firefighters there worked to put the fire out.
