Family of Mauling Victim Asks for Toy Construction Trucks for Charity

Trucks can be donated immediately at Slater Funeral Service in Scott Township or at Maddox Derkosh's funeral Mass at St. Bernard Church in Mt. Lebanon on Friday.

UPDATE: Funeral Home, Police Station to Accept Derkosh Trucks 'Indefinitely'

The Derkosh family of Whitehall Borough is asking that interested parties, in lieu of flowers, give toy construction trucks to be donated to a children's Christmas charity in the memory of 2-year old Maddox Derkosh, who died tragically at the Pittsburgh Zoo on Sunday.

The trucks are being accepted right now at William Slater II Funeral Service in Scott Township. They will also be accepted at Derkosh's funeral Mass at St. Bernard Church in Mt. Lebanon at 10 a.m. on Friday.

Friends will be welcomed for a viewing of Maddox at Slater Funeral Service from 2 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, according to Maddox's obituary on the funeral service's website.

Trucks can also be dropped off at the Whitehall Police Department lobby throughout Wednesday.

Maddox was visiting the Pittsburgh Zoo with his mother when he fell from the top of a platform railing to the ground inside of the pit area of an African painted dogs exhibit. He was mauled to death by the dogs.

A group of families who belong to Whitehall's St. Gabriel of the Sorrowful Virgin Parish have started a Facebook page to raise funds for the Derkosh family.

"A few of us moms from St. Gabriel's wanted to do something for the Derkosh family," page creator Jennifer Gannon said. "We came up with the idea to raise money for them. With the money raised, we plan on getting various gift cards from various different places and also give a monetary donation.

"Any amount will help. The account is set up through PayPal, and you can donate any amount you would like."

Unfortunately, not everyone is aware of his name. I would rather that the headline reach as many people as possible.

I agree. Please show at least a little bit of respect. I am sure, being a 'journalist' you can find a more sensitive, appropriate word choice. Ex: zoo tragedy would reach just as many people.

This headline is where I've landed Alina, but thank you for the alternative. Many folks are finding this story through Internet searches of "mauling," and if this story can get folks the information that they want that way, then I am fine with it.

PLease be aware that the request for the park in our neighborhood to be renamed after Maddox is still in the works, council has not been notified of the request yet, just the boro manager. Apparently there is a post on Facebook stating that this is a done deal. I don't have access to Facebook, so would somebody please ask to have this comment removed due to it's inaccuracy? Thanks:)
