2012 Caste Village Fireworks Info

Independence Day celebration begins at 5 p.m. on Friday. Fireworks expected at 9:30.

One of the best yearly attractions in Pittsburgh's South Hills area returns this Friday when Caste Village in Whitehall Borough hosts another Independence Day celebration, starting at 5 p.m.

Most Caste stores will be open during the celebration to sell food, refreshments and other goods, including Frisch's Restaurant with its famous service line, Julie's Treats with its candy and ice cream, and many, many others.

Of course, the event also includes Caste Village's renowned free fireworks show, which is expected to start at around 9:30 p.m. Pyrotecnico has the fireworks honors this year.

Musical entertainment will also be provided all night long, including a disc jockey from 5-7 and a live band from 7-9.

As usual, area drivers should expect the closure of Village Lane, part of Grove Road from Village Lane to Baptist Road and part of Weyman Road between Village Lane and Baptist in the hours immediately before, during and immediately after the night's festivities.

The Caste Village parking lots are always packed for this event. Not only are the lots popular temporary campsites, they also offer great vantage points of the fireworks show.

Click here to see a list from June 2011 showing other places in Whitehall that serve as great fireworks viewing spots.

I am so very excited for this! This is truly why people created the word “Summer”!

Do you know if Frank’s Shoes will be open during the festivities? A few years ago my Uncle Helix kicked a firework while wearing open toe sandals and burned his foot. If he were to want to kick fireworks again, it would be beneficial if he could buy a pair of boots from Frank to protect his feet.

It is terrible that people bring small kids down to Caste Village and get as drunk as a skunk waiting for the fireworks.. Then after the fireworks get their family in the car and drive home drunk. Having one or two beers is one thing but to be plastered and putting your family in the car and driving is stupid. Have a designated driver to make sure your children make it home safely.

Has anyone ever seen all the trash left in the parking lot after everyone leaves? It's unbelievable how dirty humans can be. Broken beer bottles everywhere, hundreds of pizza boxes, all kinds of stuff. Looks like a tornado went thru.

Frank I totally agree with you that they leave garbage and broken glass all over the lot. What is so wrong with them throwing a white or black garbage bag in their car before they go down to Caste Village and putting their trash in them. I'm sure the ones cleaning the parking lot the next day would rather pick up 1,000 garbage bags then cleaning up all the broken glass, cans and other garbage they leave all over the place.

What gets me mad about it is that if I have to go down there to one of the businesses I can't find a parking space because people are camped out there from early morning on. Sitting in lounge chairs in parking spaces. Something should be done about that.

Margaret, last year I was down there the day of fireworks because I had to go to the dentist and there was 2 ladies that has about 10 spots saved with lounge chairs and they also took over 2 handicap parking spaces. I went over and yelled at them because there was an elderly couple that wanted to pull in one of the spots and they didn't want to move their chairs that they had set out. I got my cell phone out and told them that unless they had handicap parking plaques or tags they cannot block handicap parking and told them I was calling Whitehall Police. I got called a few choice words but they did move the chairs for the couple then. What was really sad was they were drinking around lunchtime and their kids were running around the parking lot dodging cars and the mothers were not making sure their children were safe. I was kidding with my son that we should go down there and take 10 cars and park them down their so we have spots. But he laughed because we usually squeeze 10 people in the SUV, and try to only use one spot.
A great fundraiser for Whitehall Fire Department would be to charge $10 for each saved parking spot, since people don't like to support the fire dept. If they did this then there would be a ton of open parking spaces.

Wait a cotton-pickin' minute here! Are you saying you want the NANNY STATE BIG GUBBERMINT to step in and help you when you or somebody you like feel wronged by a neighbor?

Are you thinking, "Well, isn't that why I pay my taxes? Elect those public officials?" But YOUR government is only there to help with the things that bother YOU, right?

But if that same elderly couple had respiratory problems or cardiovascular disease that was aggravated by the smoke from YOUR BACKYARD FIRE PIT, and the old girl called the cops for assistance because she was too timid to confront you and all your friends because you're so popular and everybody comes to sit in YOUR backyard while she and her husband are alone with the windows closed...or, OMG, they went to COUNCIL to try to get relief via ordinance, well, now, girls! Now that's just TOO MUCH NANNY STATE GUBBERMINT!!!! People should shut up, stay inside with their windows closed 24/7 and let YOU have YOUR fun!!!!!!! That's the PROPER role of gubbermint!

Ain't dat what da FOUNDING FATHERS SAID????

Now I understand.

ml -that isn't the case for everyone that lives in Whitehall since people live behind the Baldwin High School and can't see the fireworks from their homes and they live in Whitehall. Places in Castle Shannon also have an awesome view of the Fire Works coming from Caste Village, so do homes in Baldwin have a great view of the Fire Works. Then again Whitehall is the best place to live.

And you don't have to hunt for a place away from home to get a great view.
Any extra cars around, etc, is just for one night.
I guess if anyone is strongly bothered by the event being close to their home, they could make plans to be out somewhere else that night.

Yes leaving the neighborhood that night is a great solution, so that people from Baldwin can come over and park in your grass.

This fireworks show is wonderful and for some it is a great night. I hope that the Whitehall police have extra extra officers on duty that evening. I agree with the writer previous that there is so much drinking going on and the underage drinking is amazing. And then to top it all off, they all get in their cars and proceed to leave on the roads where the rest of us who have not been drinking are driving. Okay, have a beer. But do you have to get so sloshed to enjoy the fireworks? And parents, this is not the night that you let your kids run like little animals, please. Keep an eye on them. Don't give them those sparklers that will burn their little fingers off, etc. use our God given brains.

Besides, it is fun sitting out watching the people walk down, better than the mall. Maybe I will try super gluing a quarter to the street and see how many try to pick it up. LOL

Margaret I agree with you there, some think they are entitled to pull in others yards and park if your not home and love your idea of super gluing a quarter to the street, that would crack me up watching people try to pick it up. We go down to Caste around 5 at night to eat and watch fireworks. My driveway will be the one full of cars and cars parked across the driveway and yard so that no one can drive in the yard to park. We don't take beer or drinks with us either as it is a family gathering and take 2 coolers of drinks (pop, ice tea and water), plus we take black garbage bags to pick up our trash. I told my daughter and her friends that they should take the box of black trash bags from home and walk around the parking lot and pass them out to the people that have litter all over the place.
Have you ever noticed that in Whitehall you don't find a lot of garbage around on the streets and yards but when you drive though Baldwin you see trash all over the place.

I can't wait to hear about the path either Friday night or Saturday morning.

Seriously, that's NOT what I think at all, Denice. I'm truly sorry for what happened to your property. Some people can spell certain words, but when it comes to seeing things from another's perspective, well, gee! Their minds just don't work that way!

I hate wood smoke coming over to my house from neighbors' fire pits making me SICK! But the oh-so-popular neighbors who sit around the fire with all their friends in the backyard all spring, summer and fall think I am the problem here!

Denise, we have canvas awnings also on my house that caught fire a few years back and what I do is soak them with water before we go down to Caste. It isn't just Armstrong that wants Fireworks in Caste, they have been going on for years before they moved in there. I would also be calling Pyrotecnico and sending them a registered letter with a picture of your awning before the fireworks and telling them that if your awning is caught on fire this year that you are retaining a lawyer to be paid for replacing the awning. I'm not saying to sue them, but tell them that they will be paying for it this year if it gets destroyed or burned from their fireworks.

Margaret, I put in about 30 tomato plants, zucchinis, peppers, Italian Flat Green Beans, cucumbers and lettuce and give to all my neighbors as I grow to much and enjoy my garden and given away to people. If she was nice to me the other 350 days in the year, I would be more than happy to give her homegrown veggies, but she is nasty the rest of the time. Yells at the kids for making noise in the pool during the afternoon, calls the cops and says we are having wild pool parties and using the fire pit. That is nice that your daughter brought you fresh veggies, nothing like a beefsteak tomato sandwich on toast. My son is in Japan working and won't make it home for the 4th and my daughter in law and grandbaby's will be up on Sunday for a week. Were going to broadcast the fireworks to him on the computer Friday night from Caste Village. I got the laptop, video camera ready, all we have to do on Friday is connect into Skype. We plan on leaving Skype up from 6 pm so that he can talk to his friends when they stop by us down at Caste. Not the same as him being here but it is the best we can do.

Denice in 2009 and 2010 Zambelli did the firework show in Caste Village, in 2011 Pyrotechnico did them as they are doing them this year. Not sure why you think Armstrong has anything to do with the fireworks. It is who gives them the best bids. Every year fireworks gets better as they find new ways on how to make improvements on them. I don't know why you don't think these fireworks are for our benefit but if you ask anyone else they would tell you different.

Denice if you wet them down then they won't catch fire. If you have the fireworks on Video and them catching your awning on fire, you should of went down to the Magistrate John Bova and filed a complaint against the company that set them off. The Magistrate office would of given you a fair hearing and they would make the company pay if they are at fault. You didn't say what year your awning caught on fire. I would be taking a movie of them this year also in case it happens again.

Denice, since the fire trucks are there in front of you place, then you can ask the fire dept to put your awning out if it catches on fire and is smoldering when the fireworks are being shot off. Whitehall doesn't want to see anyone homes catching on fire when these fireworks are being put on for the people in Whitehall as a way of Caste Village saying thank you to the people that shop there and show their support. I don't remember every seeing a 3 story Cape Code up on Old Boston with a canvas awning up on the 3rd floor.

Sure do know who you mean and I am a female also. My trick to keep the deer out of my garden is to use a old pair of pantyhoses and stuff it with hair that I get from the beauty parlor (down at Caste Village), then I cut the legs off and tie a knot in the end of the pantyhose and tie one to each piece of pcv piping that I have in the 4 corners of my garden. Deer think humans are present when they smell the hair and don't come near my garden.

Fireworks night is the worst night of the year. Some of these comments made are ridiculous and obviously made by people who think its ok for underage drinking, drunk driving, desrtoying peoples property ect...We can,t leave our house that night because we have to partol our front and back yards. We have to deal with people trying to park in OUR driveway, walking all over flowers we have planted, URINATING in our yards and on our cars, vomiting in our yards, drunk drivers hitting our cars ect..What a great FAMILY event. Went to a borough meeting about all of this and was basically laughed at by the board. Called police3 times 2 years ago when a drunk driver was hitting our cars- NEVER RESPONDED!!! YA great FAMILY even., I was told at the next borough meeting that fireworks night went off without a problem. I guess drunk driving is not a problem to them. Was also told that there is no open container law in Whitehall. What a great FAMILY event when i have to watch hundreds of people walking down Baptist road with cases and cases of alcohol on their shoulders , then after the fireworks watched them all stumble to their cars and drive home.Obviously these people making these comments on this page have NO respect for other peoples property, no respect for innocent peoples lives. What is it going to take for you people to WAKE up- some innocent child getting killed?

We walk down to Caste Village with 2 coolers and do not have any beer in them either. Why don't you film everything your saying and then post it on youtube so you can get a million votes and then maybe Whitehall would do something about it. I have never heard of our cops even on firework night not responding to a accident where a drunk driver hit someones car. I have not read anything on here that anyone is ok for underage drinking either. Just think, Brentwood is going to be dealing with this mess next week.

Fireworks night is awful!! From an employee that works in caste, this day is the worst day ever!! Let's start with when you have to be at work at 1 that day, good luck finding a spot to park because you can't! Even at 9am you can't find a spot! Businesses hate this day due to the fact that your customers can't find parking to even come in and shop!! Parents allow their kids to run all over the parking lot and these kids run in and out of stores, causes damage and complete chaos!! Watch your kids!! O wait, they can't because they are drunk from drinking all day!! Trash is everywhere! People pick up your trash you disgusting pigs!! Then they drive home after fireworks!! Even more annoying is when you have worked all day and head to your car to leave! People parked in their chairs infront of your car, when asked to move getting yelled at because you wasted a space!! Sorry I worked all day, and had to deal with uncontrollable kids and teens, I'm really not in the mood to watch fireworks at that point!! This is NOT a FAMILY event. It's a night for underage drinking, adults drinking way to much, and causing pure chaos!!

We don't really care where you are from. If the shoe fits..... Some of the people we are talking about are from Baldwin and Whitehall.

See, Shawn, these here folks, they aksed their lawd about fire pits. They said, "Lawd, we got dis here nasty old lady, sick and miserable all de time and evryting. She nasty, Lawd!"

Then they aksed him, "Lawdy, WWJD?" And their lawd answered unto them, "Smoke 'em if ya got 'em!"

So they just KNEW that smokin' out that sick old lady that nobody on the street likes anyway was the will of their Lawd, Shawntonio!

See, these here folks done been SAVED! He protects their houses from fireworks, too, Shawn. Think about dat! And get right wit de lawd!

Wow, fireworks are going on I presume. I am in my living room and can hear the rumbling but can't figure out if it is the thunder from the storm or the fireworks.

I had to go over that way earlier to pick up something and am glad I made the decision not to try to even stay there. Right now I am saying a prayer for all of the people who had been drinking all day and more than likely should NOT be driving .. I pray that they get home safely without any problems or hurting themselves or any innocent people in their path. And I am glad I am NOT on the roads.

I thought that the last line was part of the Poem! My lack of fully understanding the english dialect has caused me once again to shame myself. My apologies to the followers.

cc-last night my friend said a naked woman ran past her yelling Rape and she wanted help. I think some guys were chasing her. My friend called the police. I hope they got the guys and lock them up. I haven't been down there for years other than one late afternoon coming home over the Birmingham Bridge. I will make sure I carry my gun if I have to go down there again. (even if it appalls Judy Thompson LOL)

I was glad to go down and give them a ride but it is scary being in the South Side. I try to avoid that area at night. I hope that the Police were able to help the women that was yelling rape and running nude. I have heard their are a lot of rapes down in the South Side at night, but don't know if it is true or not. Margaret I carry all the time unless i'm going swimming. It is part of getting dressed every morning after I take my shower. My boss reads the Patch as he is from Whitehall too and I told him as much as he does. He was shocked when I told him that I known he was carrying for years.

A person only needs to see what each of these people to do know they must be crazy. With what we each see of our "crazy lady neighbor" we can safely assume she is a few fries short of a happy meal.
