Sex Assault Charges Held Against Brentwood Man

William Scherz, 73, was a bus driver for the Baldwin-Whitehall School District.

Charges against William Scherz, 73, of Brentwood, were held for court on Monday.

Scherz was a Baldwin-Whitehall School District bus driver when he was accused in February of driving to Elizabeth Township to have sex with a 15-year-old boy. Scherz faces charges of corruption of minors, involuntary deviate sexual intercourse and statutory sexual assault, among others.

His formal arraignment at the Allegheny County Court of Common Pleas is scheduled for May 9 at 1 p.m., according to an online court document.

B-W School District Superintendent Dr. Randal A. Lutz said that Scherz is on unpaid leave from the district pending the outcome of the legal process. Scherz has not been disciplined by the district, Lutz said.

Why is a 73 year old driving a school bus? No one over the age of 70 should be driving a school bus. The school district should have to disclose the age of the bus drivers to the parents. Would you entrust your child to a 73 year old school bus driver? Every child who was ever on his school bus should be interviewed by the Baldwin Police Department. He probably knew someone on the school board to get the job.

Age discrimination? Who decides that every person over 70 is incapable? (other than the state if they say an older person failed their retest).

Joseph Loy - What do you propose, Joe? Should we put everyone over 70 in The Villages in Florida and restrict them all to driving golf carts? How about senior citizen internment camps? Let's see what you think as you get up there in years young fella.

This 73 year old has to pass a physical to drive a bus. They also raised the age of when you can retire for Social Security to 70.

Baldwin is looking for bus drivers there is always ads for bus drivers so guess the school board doesn't know to many people that want part time bus jobs.

Joseph first of all his age and his ability to drive have nothing to do with the charges he is facing. Secondly he could have been 53,43,33,etc and been accused of doing the same thing while he was employed as a bus driver for BWH. Thirdly, if some one passes a background check, a physical, and a comprehensive drivers test at the age of 73 why shouldn't they be allowed to drive a school bus. It is nuts to say "no one over the age of 70 should be driving a school bus." Lastly, I am sure that BPD would interview children who rode the bus if it warranted. But there are plenty of people in their early 70's who can drive a school bus I really do not think age is the issue here.~1*

My parents are 73- healthy as horses. My dad is one of the safest drivers I know. There's something to be said for life experience. If Mr. Scherz was a driver with a poor driving record, there's no way he'd be driving our kids around.

As a retired B-W driver, I read these comments with amusement. My experience in this field has taught me that the kids I observed are not the rotten spoiled brats as portrait by many, but children of those who are. The B-W transportation dept has the impossible task of trying to please everyone while being hamstrung by state laws and regulations. No child is forced to ride a bus. If you are one who is displeased with this service may I suggest that you get off your lazy a** and take your children to school yourself so the rest of us don't have to hear you whine.

They also raised the age of when you can retire for Social Security to 70. >>>

NOTE that the information posted above is incorrect.
Full retirement age for SS for a person currently 73 would have been
65 and 4 mos if born in 1939, or 65 and 6 months if born in 1940.

My son just received his papers from Social Security and it says he cannot start to collect his SS till he is 70 years old, unless he collect under SSI or SSDI. Things have changed for the younger generation, not people born before 1959. But once again know it all knows nothing.

cc's statement above is still INCORRECT.

<<<Things have changed for the younger generation, not people born before 1959. But once again know it all knows nothing.>>>

In fact changes affect anyone born 1938 on, but none make you wait till age 70.
We ARE speaking of a 73 year old here, but even younger ones do NOT have to wait to 70 to collect SS.
As to the younger, anyone born 1960 or later has a full (normal) retirement age of 67, but with benefits available at 70% by age 62.
As the official site says: As a general rule, early or late retirement will give you about the same total Social Security benefits over your lifetime. If you retire early, the monthly benefit amounts will be smaller to take into account the longer period you will receive them. If you retire late, you will get benefits for a shorter period of time but the monthly amounts will be larger to make up for the months when you did not receive anything. There are advantages and disadvantages to taking your benefit before full retirement age. The advantage is you collect benefits for a longer period of time; disadvantage is benefit is reduced. Each person's situation is different
