Baldwin Woman on NRA, U.S. Gun Violence
'How many more mass murders do we have to endure?'
Beverly L. Darwin, a Baldwin Borough resident, takes on the issue of gun violence in the United States with a July 25 letter to the editor of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.
Mentioning a theater shooting in Colorado and other recent episodes of gun violence, Darwin writes, "How many more mass murders do we have to endure ... before we can legislate reasonable gun control in this violent country?"
Read Darwin's full letter here, where she writes, "The National Rifle Association rules our country and threatens our representatives into timidly throwing out any gun control attempts."

Yet again, guns don't kill people, people kill people. What caliber gun does she think is incapable of killing someone? With a well placed shot a BB gun is a lethal weapon, since "assault rifles" are evil. The assault rifle gets all the attention here, but the deadliest weapon used in the recent Colorado shootings was a basic 12 gauge shotgun, because it casts a spread of bullets, which is very lethal in a close confined space. If you give the government an inch when it comes to assault rifles in gun control, you're giving them an open door and access to decide what caliber weapon is non-lethal, which is a very slippery slope.

That line that guns don't kill ppl is a big pile of bull poop. Guns kill ppl and crazy ppl with guns Jill more ppl. We need responsible gun control laws in this country, and that lady is right. The NRA is a communist organization that does hold politicians basically at gun point if they don't vote their way. This is why we need term limits, and to do away with political lobbies. Ok I'm jumping off the soap box

Millions of people carry guns every day with permits to carry and they don't go out and cause shootings. It is the ones that are mentally ill that do these crimes. Maybe the should give everyone a psychological examination before they are permitted to get a gun.

Mental screenings - YES Fool proof - NO
Mental illness can strike at anytime and sometimes without warning.
You have a internal fight or flight response and sometimes the safety fails even with people who have had prior evaluations and ones who may have required mini evaluations during their time of service depending on their occupations and circumstances. Mini evaluations can be used as a back up to determine ones current stability.
In my opinion GUN REFORM is a MUST! However abolishing guns all together would be FOOLISH not FOOL PROOF.

Let me start this off by saying I own zero guns. Gun control is proven not to work... New York City has a no public weapons policy, conciled or hip worn. Yet it has one of this highest gun violence rates in the US. Had one person had a weapon in that theater maybe only a few people would have been injured or killed. Stories like these are tragic, they happen way to often. But cutting up the constitution is not the answer, this county was built on people carrying weapons. Maybe if more had guns like back in the 1800's mass killings would be less common. Remember violent people don't follow the law. They will get the guns, the body armor, and the tear gas. Im glad they have him alive and in custody, maybe a firing squad is the correct answer for his actions.

As long as you have a permit to carry a concealed weapon you can carry a gun in New York City. You can't carry a concealed weapon in Washington DC.

NB-you wrote "That line that guns don't kill ppl is a big pile of bull poop." You are wrong. You can set a gun on a table and if nobody touched it for 100 years it would never kill anyone. As soon as a PERSON with mental issues or whatever picks it up it can become a deadly weapon. Also true is the saying "If guns are outlawed then only outlaws will have guns."
Many things can be considered a deadly weapon.. a knife, a hammer, a pair of scissors, a brick. None of these kill, it is the person who picks it up that kills.

So true Margaret. First thing they teach you at a gun safety course is respect of the gun.

To NB Resident - There are already gun control laws in this country. I see nobody is mentioning the homemade bomb that was at his apartment, probably made from common house hold items. Are we going to ban those items he used too? He just as well have driven his car into the line waiting to get into the theater. Sadly the point is if some loon wants kill they will find a way to do it.

Criminal will always find ways to have guns. Question.....if a criminal with or without a gun is going to break into a home. If home "A" has a sign that reads "Protected By Smith & Wesson" and home "B" has a sign that reads "No Guns in this house".....which house do you think he will break into? YOU CANNOT DISARM THE CITIZENS OF THIS COUNTRY.

I agree with Frank. Kman said it perfectly. I sure hope nobody knows where Michael lives. That was a stupid thing to say. I feel sorry for anyone who tries to break in here. If they can get past the dogs then wait til they see what is next. LOL

Yes Beverly, you're right. More laws are always the correct action. It doesn't matter the judical system refuses to punish criminals for their crimes. And the goofball liberals won't open their eyes to what they are doing to this country with their socialist agenda. It doesn't take a village to raise a child, it takes 2 loving parents who are allowed to disciple them before they grown up to be mass murders and blame their inadequacies on everyone other then themselves.

so true jwk, if we ban guns then only the outlaws will have them. what point is that. Just like the holdup at the Giant Eagles bank, people were freaking out because some have permits to carry concealed weapons. Now when they go grocery shopping, I'm sure these liberals wait for a gun fight.
