Baldwin-Whitehall Board President to Resign

John Schmotzer will end 11 straight years on the school board next Wednesday.

December 2012 will mark the first month in 11 years that the Baldwin-Whitehall School Board will be without John B. Schmotzer, its current president.

Schmotzer made a surprise announcement toward the end of Wednesday night's school board meeting that next week's meeting will be his last.

In an interview after the meeting, Schmotzer said that "it was just time" and that he desired to spend more hours with his family and in furthering his business—Metropolitan Window Company.

"I've thought about it (resigning) for a while," Schmotzer said. "I'm expanding my business into another city (Erie), and actually, Wednesday nights, my grandchildren come over to the house. And I love 'em. And I just want to spend more time with them. And I'm very occupied with not just coming to two meetings a month but all of the reading and the research I do.

"When I do a job, I try to do it to the best of my ability—110 percent I give to anything that I do—so I wanted to free my life up a little bit. And something had to give.

"Being on the school board 11 years was a long enough time, and I've decided that it's time for someone else to take over."

Schmotzer said that he will also give more of his time to helping his wife, Maggie, in her efforts as the chairperson of the Blacktie & Tailpipes Gala portion of the Pittsburgh Vintage Grand Prix. The charity-driven event benefits the Autism Society of Pittsburgh and Allegheny Valley School, and the 2013 Gala will be held at South Hills Country Club in Whitehall Borough on July 12.

"I'm walking out (of B-W School District administration) very proud," John said. "I think, over the 11 years, with the various members I've served with, we've accomplished a great deal.

"The district is on solid financial ground. I hope it stays that way. And the facilities have been upgraded."

John acknowledged that the district still has "a ways to go academically" but pointed out that the levels of satisfactory academic achievement keep rising in Pennsylvania, making it that much harder to achieve adequate yearly progress year after year.

"The bar is being raised so high that, now, it's affecting other districts like the Mt. Lebanons, the Upper St. Clairs, the Bethel (Park)s that it never affected before.

"So, academically, we have our work cut out for ourselves, but I truly believe that (Superintendent) Dr. (Randal A.) Lutz and (Assistant Superintendent) Denise (Sedlacek) will do a phenomenal job."

Most of John's fellow school board members on Wednesday opted to save their parting words for him until next week, but board member Nancy Sciulli DiNardo did not wait to praise the outgoing board president.

"To build a high school, to go through what we've gone through in this district, to have a contract for our teachers that we have, to have facilities, to have what we have going on in this district, to be No. 1 on that (recent) audit (among peer districts) with that fund balance is unbelievable," Sciulli DiNardo said." And that takes hard work.

"I know that you've taken a lot of heat personally, and so has your family, with you serving on this board, and I respect you and admire you for that."

The B-W School District Office will accept résumés for 30 days from Wednesday night, Nov. 14, to fill Schmotzer's vacated seat. It is not known yet what path that the board will take to fill the vacancy nor how it will handle the presidency.

This is a great day for Baldwin that Schmotzer is going. Now if we could get rid of the rest of the members and bring in a school board that wants a better education for our students. I bet the good ole boy system already have in place who is going to get the job, but they have to go though the motions of posting the position.

Wonder if his seat is going back to Martin Michael Schmotzer now that he has to leave the office over in Brookline that he could not get elected to. Won't be the first time our school board members played that game. God, I hope that is not the case. Let's get some new blood on this school board.

Sandra, the school board members appoint new members when publicly elected ones resign during their terms.

Mr. Healy, I believe you and others have shown the process for APPOINTMENT to the School Board. I will make a prediction the one and only Martin Schmotzer is chosen to come back the the School Board. Just a hunch, based on past appointments being kept within the fold.

Piper have to agree with you there, as this space was only held for Marty to come back.

CC and Frank and all others who are quick to judge and go on their "patch" rant... What have YOU done for the community? Kudos to John Schmotzer, I admire him and the endless time he has VOLUNTEERED over 11 YEARS and the outstanding work he has done for our district. If both of you think you can do better and ready to give endless hours a week, please do us all a favor and apply for the position. I can't wait for you to be on the board and TRY to do half the things John accomplished. !

Are you kidding? Who gets on the school board unless they are related to a member or good friend of a member ....... really?

I wouldn't even want to attempt half the things John has, as you put it 'accomplished' (accomplished bad things!). And fyi I do plenty for my community. I yell at the speeders on my street, I yell at crazy lady who flies thru the stop sign, I report to MUFON on all the local UFO sightings, I pick up a stray piece of trash on the ground once in a while, I even painted ol' Mr. Hanaleys fence once, and I have my dog scare away the crazy Mormons who go door to door on my street. So top that Timmy!

haha. Frank this is priceless. Uncle Helix told me that he "belched from his pants"! Weid. I know but Uncle Helix is giddy as a school child since Brickley-Smotzer will be stepping down.

Is there any truth to the rumor that he wants to coach the football team?

Seems like perfect timing. Marty is done with his State Rep gig, so now he can just slide right back onto the board.
I do commend John on his 11 years of service to the community and district. Mrs. DiNardo is correct, to go through all that and still get the audit results they did is impressive.

Don't forget ... Nancy DiNardo "slid" back onto the school board when her husband decided to leave so don't be surprised if Marty slides right back in. They are saying that resumes can be submitted. How about we all send our resumes ... surely one of us is capable of sitting on the board. If we all do this and Marty magically reappears I want an explanation as to why he is back on.

John Schmotzer has done an exceptional job as a school board member. He has twice lowered taxes while not having a single increase over the past 5 years. In addition, Schmotzer was on the front line of the balancing of an increasingly difficult budget, and to top it all off, he helped get the Baldwin-Whitehall School District one of the best teaching contracts in the state of PA. It is just a shame that the teachers sat on their thumbs when they could have given back to the district by taking a pay freeze. So many other districts in PA have had the goodwill of their teachers when it came to taking pay freezes, but not here. John Schmotzer is a fine man, and an even better school board member, this district will miss him dearly.

Hmmmmm one member on the school board that lowered taxes when my school taxes have gone up. One member on the school board that balanced the teacher budget. Sorry but I don't know of any people that are going to miss John Schmotzer.

I totally agree. Great quote. If the above whiners can improve on Mr. Schmotzer's record.......then give it a try. You can NEVER please all of the people all of the time. You can just do your best.

Thank you Mr. Schmotzer for all your time over the years. Our community needs more people like you and less people like the ones that sit here and criticize. I would love to hear from all the people that write negative comments and hear what they do with their lives. I bet nothing!

This whiner would like the chance to sit on the school board. I would gladly welcome the opportunity to do this. I am newly retired and have my evenings free. I am a retired CPA and would be able to give of my time, experience, etc. I will send my resume.

I should also note that I am a Navy veteran, I have a Master's degree in Business. I managed to send three kids to college and all three have degrees. Sheryl is a nurse with her Master's degree in Education. She teaches at Duquesne University. We are Christian. We have no debt. We own our home in the district and have lived here for over 30 years. I would be an excellent candidate for a position on the school board.

OK, Bob, thanks for your Navy service.
We'll hopefully hear more from you when you actually decide to go after this position.
But may I ask, what difference does it make if you are Christian?
Are you planning to impose religious practices on the Public school system?

re Sheryl and Bob "am I the only one whose taxes are being increased in the district?"

The B-W School Board voted June 13 on its final 2012-13 budget, which called for a tax increase of 0.5 mills instead of the 1.08 mills considered in an earlier plan.
Baldwin-Whitehall School Board shot down a recommendation by B-W School District administrators to raise the district's tax rate by 0.5 mills.Instead, a new 2012-13 budget plan adopted by the school board keeps Baldwin-Whitehall's taxes at a rate of 23.40 mills for at least another fiscal year. The last increase was 2006-07 .
this information is all from the PATCH.

WE DO NOT WANT MARTY SCHMOTZER ON THIS SCHOOL BOARD AGAIN, ANY MORE EVER. HE HAS NO BUSINESS AND NEVER DID HAVE ANY BUSINESS SITTING ON THE SCHOOL BOARD. I DON'T CARE WHAT TROUBLE HIS BROTHER BAILED HIM OUT FROM .... HE HAS NO BUSINESS BEING ON THE SCHOOL BOARD OR REPRESENTING ANY OF US WITHIN THE DISTRICT OR AREA. WE ARE ALL AWARE OF WHAT THESE MEMBERS DO .. THEY LEAVE FOR A WHILE, THE POSITION IS GIVEN TO THEIR SPOUSE OR OTHER FAMILY MEMBER OR FRIEND ... THEN THEY LEAVE ... THEN THE FAMILY MEMBER COMES BACK ..... THIS IS WRONG. GUESS WE WILL SEE THIS WHEN MARTY IS "GIVEN" THE POSITION BACK BY HIS BROTHER. DO NOT LET THIS HAPPEN.

You are all ridiculous! Wish you would take your energy and put it into something useful and make a difference like our school board members. (which are elected by YOU)... Except when someone resigns, the board elects the member I hope to see all your applications submitted if you think you can do better. But obviously you won't go through the effort, instead you will just continue to complain and post your opinions that are worthless and contain no factual information. May peace be with you all. :)

Sorry Tom but I didn't vote for one member that is sitting on this school board, not sure how they keep on getting back on there, but they don't go away. They should put in place a 2 term limit for the time they can be on the board, then maybe then we will get back the school that we had years ago.

Robert...unable to attend the Baldwin-Whitehall school board meeting tonight. Looking forward to your meeting notes. Hope everyone behaves. Hope we don't have to back peddle and have an officer present again at the meetings. I guess it's better to be safe. I always say keep it positive and you can't go wrong... at least for yourself anyway! ;)
