Baldwin Councilman Storms Out of Public Meeting

John Ferris calls the council 'despicable' shortly after a borough employee is fired, and other notes from Tuesday night's council meeting.

Ferris Quite Upset with Fellow Council Members

Although Councilmen David Depretis and John Conley were absent from Tuesday night's Baldwin Borough meeting, there were still enough of their fellow council members present to approve of the firing of an unnamed borough employee.

The Baldwin Council voted, 4-1—Councilman John Ferris had the only "no" vote—to approve of the termination, but Councilman Ed Moeller explained after the meeting that his "yes" vote was merely to authorize borough Manager John Barrett to act on the termination if Barrett believed that there was just cause to do so.

Shortly after that vote was taken, Ferris got out of his seat and headed for the exit door—but not before uttering a few parting words. Ferris called the council "despicable" on his way out and then finished with "Harold, I'll see you in court." It was not clear whom Ferris was talking to.

After the meeting, borough solicitor Stanley B. Lederman refused to identify the fired employee or what the cause of his or her termination was. Lederman would also not identify what position(s) that the fired employee held.

Outstanding Traffic Service Award Given to Baldwin Police

AAA recently awarded a 2012 Community Traffic Safety Platinum Award to the Baldwin Borough Police Department, Baldwin police Chief Michael Scott informed the borough council on Tuesday night.

The award recognizes the Baldwin police for "outstanding service (and) dedication and the significant impact made by improving the quality of life through traffic safety programming."

Borough Holiday Event

Moeller's request to have the Baldwin Municipal Complex along Churchview Avenue serve as the host for a community holiday event on Dec. 5 was approved by the council, 4-0. (Ferris had left the borough meeting by then.)

The event will run from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.—free to the public—and will feature Christmas carolers, a deejay, crafters, hot chocolate, coffee, other treats, face-painting, a visit from Santa Claus and the lighting of the borough Christmas tree.

The Baldwin Kiwanis Club is the event's sponsor.

Zoning Hearing Board Members Sought

As expected, the Baldwin Council approved advertising for two additional members to join the borough's Zoning Hearing Board, which currently has a three-person membership.

The advertising motion passed, 4-0. (Ferris had left the borough meeting by then.)

The idea is to ultimately increase the Zoning Hearing Board membership to five seats. Barrett is recommending the increase, saying that it is often hard to establish a legal quorum of three board members for zoning hearings.

Borough management is now accepting résumés for the vacancies. For more information, call 412-882-9600

Robert - it appears as though my Uncle Helix fable has disappeared. If it was inappropriate in anyway, I sincerely apologize. I am just giddy as a school child for the pending holiday.

There is more to police work then DUI's. Thankfully Whitehall Borough and Baldwin Township have excellent police departments and do more than just bust dui's.

AS does Baldwin Borough Police Dept, as evidenced by this and related articles here on the Patch; plus the other work they do that is not publicized.

South Park's 'Finest'-yea, RIGHT-are only good at DUI's. Give them a real case,they're incompetent.

CC, I have absolutely no sympathy for anybody who gets caught DUI. Compared to other municipalties, doe it seem a little excessive in Baldwin yes. But my suggestion is take the civil service test and become a police officer. Otherwise if you are really that unhappy with the work Baldwin P.D. does, please move to another county and quit crying about the police. You seem to forget the very police officers you complain about, will put their life in danger to protect you if necessary.

You would'nt feel that way if you lived in South Park. I lived there for years. The cops were so shady,it was a real eye-opener.

Very true, Jerome.
Except that taking a civil service test is not enough to become a police officer, there's the academy, and specific courses required.

I agree, besides civil service, they have to show how many donuts they can carry;show the best spots to hide for sleep/shop/visit, etc.; show their loyalty by protecting friends/family from those pesky laws , and finally, showing where the Big Man shops are to buy clothes big enough to fit over their ever-expanding stomachs AND egoes.

CC, i don't drink either and as I have said, I have no sympathy for anybody who get's arrested for DUI. But it does seem like it is almost impossible to get stopped by the Baldwin P.D. and not be arrested for DUI.

Can we worry less about CC and his/her bashing of the Baldwin Borough Police, yet again. It is getting rather old by the way. We should focus on the real story here, an elected official and his failure to serve his constiuents. Running out of a meeting like a child because you don't get your way is no way to govern. Please take your ball and go home (never to return to council) Mr. Ferris. And for CC, as a business owner on the border of Baldwin and Whitehall borough I see this first hand, the Whitehall police are constantly dumping the problems they find wondering along the street in their community and dropping them off at my business in Baldwin Borough, pure laziness!

Purple I doubt that Whitehall drops any of their problems off in Baldwin unless it is their own residents that are cause problems in Whitehall and they are returning them to where they belong. Whitehall has one of the best police departments. It is a shame that Baldwin's board of directors act like a bunch of babies, but doesn't expect anything other that that from Baldwin.

P.P.-YOUR very comments show why some of us have bad feelings toward the police of any area. Look at the news at any given day- there is almost always a story on a bad cop. When one has seen first hand the corruption of certain officers, it's a little hard to consider the rest of them as sterling.

Maybe if you actually knew some of the good ones, you would not keep trying to paint them all with the same brush. Doesn't matter if it is firefighters, police, teachers, council members, bus drivers, secretaries,or whoever---there are good and bad people in all walks of life.

As to cc's bashing, cc has still never come back to tell us exactly where she witnessed all this drug dealing on "Brownsville Rd up by Brentwood" and why she called the Baldwin Borough Police when that is not even in Baldwin Borough.
Not that it's worth "worry" on my part, but just to set the record straight, all her posts bashing the cops for this are still on Patch, but she seems unable to admit that she called the wrong police, if she even called anyone.

By the very nature of a cop's job-having the ability to TRY to destroy someone's reputation at will-to TRY to make a person's lfe miserable-they should be held to a higher standard that the rest of your listed occupations. One cousin was a cop-a BAD cop- another shot my 17 yr old cousin in the back-murdering him-cops let neighbors harrass us for years because they were friends of theirs. WE won in court. So,DON'T come on here with your sanctimonious comments-obviously you know NOTHING about cops REAL side.
