Baldwin Borough Officials Mulling Late-Night Parking Ban
Residents may soon be limited in the same way that Baldwin Township and Whitehall Borough residents are.
Baldwin Borough officials are considering a ban on late-night parking (2 to 6 a.m.) on in-borough streets.
An ordinance that would enact the ban is still being written, and borough officials have not yet announced when that proposed ordinance would be voted on.
Among the particulars being considered are whether or not the ban should be enforced all year or during the winter months only.
Residents in Baldwin Township and Whitehall Borough—the two other parts of the Baldwin-Whitehall School District—are already restricted to a year-round on-street parking ban from 2 to 6 a.m.
Also being considered is whether or not the ban should apply to every Baldwin Borough street or select areas only, such as the Leland Point Apartments complex.
Concerns range from how to pay for the many necessary no-parking signs to how to handle residences with multiple cars but not enough on-property parking space.
Rationale for the ban, at least on some streets, is to keep roads empty for snowplows, regular traffic and public safety patrol.

I agree with the proposal. I reside on a street that includes to PAT bus route. It's dangerous when cars are parked and the bus has to cross into the opposite lane. The driveways are empty. Why won't they owners park in the drive way? The late hours provide a check point for our police to look for strange cars.

I am extremely in favor of this parking ordinance. Some residents simply abuse the current situation. The Borough has zero control of what the streets are used for. I currently have a neighbor that parks an old MOTORHOME directly infront of my families home and uses it for nothing more than a storage shed. First problem is that it makes it dangerous to pull out of our driveway since you can't see or be seen. Second it is just an ugly eyesore turning a nice street into something out of a trailer park. I've repeatedly contacted council about the situation but in 2 years nothing has been done about it. I hope this finally brings some control over the situation.

Yes streets are for cars to drive on, not to park on. I have a neighbor who parks at an intersection because his driveway is at the end of one of the streets, sometimes not anywhere near the curb. Old military type guy, so he probably feels it is his right to do so.

Agree also, blossom drive is very dangerous to drive on by laurel Dr. Then all the people who cram there cars around the turns on Becky and Olympic also very dangerous and there's not a single car in there driveway. Drives me crazy

Depends on where you live. I live in the middle of a low traffic neighborhood and have paid literally HUNDREDS of dollars in fines because we have too many cars to park in our driveway (anyone with little kids should think about what will happen when they grow up, don't move out, but buy their own car). And don't even CONSIDER not paying a ticket! The constable came knocking at our door to arrest my husband for a ticket I forgot to pay after our triplets were born (I was exhausted and parking was low on my list of priorities at the time). Parking on the street for us, especially in the summer months, harms no one, yet we are repeatedly ticketed. The local police chief is completely unsympathetic. A blanket ordinance is simply ridiculous. I wish they'd spend more time trying to figure out how to stop the kids from driving so recklessly when leaving the high school. It would be a better use of borough resources. One day after school I witnessed a teen PASSING another car on the blind curve leading to 51, but maintaining clear streets between 2-6am is a priority?

20 year resident - You should report the teenage speeding problem out of the high school to Route 51 to the WHITEHALL POLICE DEPARTMENT. The high school sits in Whitehall Boro.

I also did come across your situation when we could only park 2 cars in the driveway and 1 in the garage. Before we got our 4th car for my second child to drive, I went to Whitehall to get a permit to dig out my driveway and to make sure there were no gas lines or water pipes under where we dug out to expand our driveway, since we can't park on our streets from 2 am to 6 am.
I live on a dead end street with a lot of young kids under the age of 10 play that play on the street. It is nice to see them playing on the street but very scary when they run out in between cars because our neighbors can't park in their driveway.
Teens are not the only ones that are driving recklessly, passing cars on the roads when there is a double yellow line, many adults do that also as they are in to much of a hurry or going to be late.
There is an ordinance in Whitehall and Baldwin Township about parking on streets between 2 am and 6 am and if you get tickets, it is your fault. Why should the local Police Chief be sympathetic to you as your the one that is breaking the law and not him.

I was on the Whitehall Borough's web site and was looking at the ordinances for parking and never knew my street had a ban on parking 24/7. If you live in Whitehall you can check here and see if your allowed to park on the street or not.
