The Baldwin-Whitehall Patch has partnered with the Baldwin Historical Society to bring you a weekly trivia question that delves into our area's colorful past.
Pat Lombardi and Patty Woehler, co-presidents of the society, generously write the questions and provide the pictures.
Here is this week's question (actually, questions):
This railroad tunnel started to be built in 1900 and was completed in 1902.
It was bored through solid rock and is of a semi-circular, horseshoe design.
The tunnel has a brick portal and a brick ring lining and is part of the CSX Transportation network (formerly the Baltimore & Ohio, or B&O, Railroad).
Originally, it was a double-track tunnel but is now a single track.
What is the name of this tunnel, and where is it located?

That is the WHITEHALL TUNNEL which is located in BALDWIN, between Macassar and Old Clairton. The other side of the tunnel shows the name, WHITEHALL in the brick.

This really was a good one. According to Pat Lombardi of the Baldwin Historical Society, this is "Whitehall Tunnel," also called "Option Tunnel," and it is found in south Baldwin off of Old Clairton Road near Saint Elizabeth of Hungary Roman Catholic Parish.
Here are some cool (recent) photos from this spot (http://patch.com/A-mGsJ).
