All Football Coaching Positions Declared Open in Baldwin-Whitehall

Former Head Coach Jim Wehner was also removed from his Personal Fitness position at Baldwin High School.

The Baldwin-Whitehall School Board accepted the resignation on Wednesday night of Jim Wehner as Baldwin High School's head varsity football coach. The board also declared all football coaching positions in the Baldwin-Whitehall School District as open.

The open positions include all of those at Baldwin High (varsity, junior varsity and ninth-grade teams) and at J.E. Harrison Middle School.

Wehner was also removed from his Personal Fitness position at the high school.

The district will look to fill the vacancies before next football season. Those removed from their positions could have a chance to rejoin the teams.

Following Baldwin's season-ending 42-25 loss to Bethel Park High School on Oct. 26, Wehner said, "I like this team, and hopefully, I'm gonna get the opportunity to coach them again."

Jeff Ruscitto, a Whitehall Borough resident and a parent of two members of the Baldwin High football team, approached the school board in November to ask if district administration was considering the replacement of any members of the high school football staff.

District Superintendent Dr. Randal A. Lutz told Ruscitto then that the high school's fall sports coaches had not been evaluated yet.

Baldwin's varsity team did not post a winning season during Wehner's four years as its head coach, but the 2012 Highlanders were the first of Wehner's varsity squads to not win more games than they did in their previous season.

Baldwin finished 2012 at 3-6 overall—one game worse than its 4-5 mark in 2011. In 2010, Baldwin was also 3-6, but that was after a 2-8 mark in 2009 (Wehner's first season with the team) and after a 0-9 record in 2008.

Earlier this month, the executive board of the Big 33 chose Wehner as one of the assistant coaches for Team Pennsylvania at June's Big 33 Football Classic.

Tis’ a glorious day in the Sassy Jack household! Coach Wehner has done the right thing for the kids and this program as I truly feel that he was/is the worst coach in the history of coaching at any level (including 3-4 year old Youth Soccer).

As for the seniors, this is an opportunity to take the “Bull” (nay Bull Voelker?) by the proverbial horns. Lift, Eat, Grow.

God bless the men and women conducting these interviews. May the road rise to meet your feet and may the sun shine warm upon your buttocks and until the search is over, may baby Jesus hold you in the palm of his hand.

P.S. please tell me that the School Board has no say so in this search as I feel that they are completely incompetent. God Bless.

Bull Voelker was a pleasure to watch back in the day. I hope he comes back in some way as part of the program. He was one of the only reasons I went to games the past few years. I couldn't believe he wasn't part of the coaching staff this past year. I heard he wasn't on board with the non sense going on from what I heard in the stands this past season.

Unfortunately my friend, I do not believe that Vice Sortino should have any hand in the search. In my most humblest of opinions, his competence to be our Athletic Director and do right by all of the student athletes of our glorious school, runs out the moment he puts on his pants to go to work…I would like the decision to be made by Dr. Lutz so he can claim fame to building the dynasty that I know in my heart of hearts Baldwin will have!

I am, and hope others are as well, excited for the change. God Bless you today, loyalbaldwinfan.

A few things, first off jump off the Bull Voelker idea is Bull stuff. For lots of reasons. 1st being an administrator at the MS the amount of time you have to put into a H.S. head coaching position it would take away from his duties tied to the middle school kids. Also he would not beagle to be at practices till well after varsity practice has started. Not to mention that he is tied to the same loosing history of this program, as a player and Asst coach.

The new coach should be hired by a new A.D. If Randy Lutz wants to do interviews it should be for a new A.D. Since Vince took over ad the A.D. almost every program has had below .500 programs or right around .500 with very few exceptions. The Pride Is NOT Alive! All he is good at is politics.

I am not saying Voelker is the answer, but he was not part of the staff last year and was a 2 way starter for the 1999 team who won the only section championship in Baldwin's history. So your facts arent completely true, but it would be difficult for him given his role at the middle school.

Thomas, I can't think that they have it down to 4 guys already when they haven't posted the job yet.

Silanoff was a great man, wouldn't mind seeing him back. Watching the win at Penn Hills years ago was the 2nd best Baldwin game I ever watched.

Smith had success at Gateway but im not sure he'd fit at Baldwin, but if we can get him, that'd be a good hire.

Wagner coached the past several years as an assistant. Not sure how he'd do, but he's in the building.

Voelker I have seen play and coach. I liked him as both. He would be someone worth taking a risk on based on what I saw if they didn't have a candidate that was a no brainier.

Who gets the job will depend on if a job is available. The times are tough in the education field. Don't be surprised if the AD looks at some candidates who are current head coaches in the area and not in the education field. I would think Dr. Lutz would also have a say in the process. I don't know who he knows in the football world, but that could be the wildcard.

Hopefully, they will do EVERYTHING they can to get Terry Smith. Baldwin Football has been nothing but a losing program since the 90's. One section championship does not make a program, a wining one. There is more talent roaming the halls of BHS not playing football than there is on the fid. it's not a mistake that Baldwin wins in youth football from the age of 8 up till high school and then doesn't win more than 4 or 5 games each year. Personally, the ENTIRE athletic program AND AD needs gutted. There is no better man out thre to accomplish this other than Terry Smith. He is Baldwins only chance to have successful sports programs in the future. If you doubt ANYTHING I said, do some research. It's all fact.

Unfortunately, the baldwin football program will be the same it has been in the past decade, a losing one. It is not the coaches or the AD, it is the players who are not dedicated enough to have a winning season. It is the simple fact that Baldwin football players do not have as much pride and dedication as they did in the 90's.

Johnnyfootball this is a pretty original screen name that you probably came up with after the Heisman huh! What is your basis for this absurd statement? I have been taking my son for 2 weeks at 0645hrs on M/W for QB/WR work. They have had good turn outs for these workouts. and they have been lifting M-Thur for over a month. If you are implying the kids don't want to win your an idiot who make blanket statements with no facts to back anything up. If you played in the 90's what did Baldwin do so great in the 90's. Baldwin has 1 yes exactly 1 Section title. So if this is when you played "johnnyfootball" I would not be bragging cause I see no WPIAL Titles on the football flag in the gym. These kids want to win and have won in previous years. Football coaches can motivate and make kids believe they can accomplish more than they think they can... that is part of coaching kids! Go back and live in your "glory days" of Baldwin football of the 90's.

PITT, being that I have played under Coach Whener for 2 years (awkward for you... guess u made a blanket statement) i think you can say I know what I'm talking about. As for WR/QB practices I have been there to and let me say there are very few kids that take it seriously. Most screw around and avoid coaches help. As a matter of fact one day there was so much screwing around the coach actually canceled it because no one listened. As for the weightroom, there are (on average) 20 kids that come to lift and get better. 20 kids is pretty sad. Plus, those that do come down rarely do anything besides once again, screw around.

Johnnyfootball I do feel bad you had to play for him for 2 years however its not awkward at all because you really made no point. I played for Art Walker Sr (showing my age) and nothing has changed. A head coach/and staff are the ones who have to motivate most kids to get better, be dedicated and put the time in to be a winner. It was that way years ago and will continue for years to come. I do not care where you go there is only 10%-15% of kids who work exclusively on there own without any coach to motivate and push them. It also has to happen at home and they have to have support/motivation in the house. Give a 16-18yr old the option and most of the time they will choose to do something "more fun" than lift or run. If they are screwing around it is up to the coach there to monitor and change the behavior. It is however a coach/staff that can motivate kids to get them to work and push them to become better. My point is do not say nothing will change because the players do not care because I know for a fact these kids do not want to loose. no matter if there is a new head coach. He has to be a motivator because if he is not then nothing will change. Obviously lifting is not the only way to get better Dobs but because of WPIAL rules that is what you can do now. There is certainly much more involved to be a good football player. Show me players he made better in his 4 years? P.S Stephanie I am not sure what your post to me was about cause that was my point!

Michael Dobs

7:30 am on Saturday, January 19, 2013

Not that I agree with Johnnyfootball on 90% of what he says, but he is on to something. The kids that are there are dedicated! Let me start with that, some of the staff that was there was dedicated. It's the kids that are not there. It's the percentage of the 800 boys in the school that are not on a high school sports team, that should he there. Also just because you lift does not make you better. An old college football coach once said "weights don't push back". Lifting also just makes you slower if your not adding to your skill set, IE D. Brown's 40 time I bet went up from his freshman year till his Sr. year. Just watch the film, you don't even need to clock him. Also with out hand fighting like a wrestler lineman are just bigger, not better blockers. With out tight ends playing basketball they don't improve their skill set. More kids more sports.

Reply

johnnyfootball

7:45 am on Saturday, January 19, 2013

Thank you somebody with brains. There are kids on that team that are extremely dedicated. Then there are those that socialize during lifting sessions and screw around because they simply don't care. They may want to win but the don't have pride and determination. As for not getting enough kids, it is simply because people are lazy. When asked to play football most kids would say no because there are "summer practices."

Coach Voelker cannot as an administrator. Guess that's why we are where we are. Admin needs to look outside, not sure who has applied, but it was and is time for a change. Apparently there is not a position in the district that will go along with the football job, so that eliminates many candidates. I never realized how many people have received coaching and teaching jobs and starting sports positions in our district because of who they are related to. I guess knowledge and ability just don't cut it, you have to be related to someone. That explains a whole lot about how certain kids are starters when they shouldn't be and how certain people are coaches and they shouldn't be.

I can't imagine perry being able to have too much success when he is not in the building and won't be able to steal kids from bethel, USC or Lebo like he did at seton. It was a big mistake not firing Sortino along with the coach. They needed to wipe the slate clean. This was the time to do it and it wasn't done. I have never heard one good thing about Sortino. What has he done to keep his job?

I am shoked that the Head Football job was never posted ANYWHERE! Not on the school website, not in the paper, nowhere at all. How can we expect to find the best talent if everything is being done under the table? Are the politics really that bad here, that we owe so many people favors? Is it even legal not to post job? Or is this business as usual here at Baldwin? There are some really good coaches out there with AAAA experience. Nepotism policy needs to be addressed or nothing will ever change.

I heard something about the Seton Lesalle coach having already been hired. Why has it not been announced? Does anyone have any info? Maybe Dr. Lutz could answer these questions because Sortino certainly won't.

Thomas A, I don't think you have to worry about him getting it.

Heard tonight that Seton opened their head football coach position. My guess is that the board will be voting on Perry this Wednesday.

fighting highlander they opened the position because the coach has gone after two jobs and has not gave them an answer about next year. i thought we just had the same problem with the last coach.

That is a great point Greg.

Wehner applying for the McKeesport job is the straw that broke his back.

Now if they hire Perry, who has applied for at least the BW and CV jobs this year, they are right back where they started. He will be here until he can move on.

This whole process was fishy if you ask me. Job was only posted internally for a week as I didn't see it posted in any newspapers, then Perry pulls his name from CV and looks to be all but officially the next BW coach.

Wish our school could get a coach like Palko from West Allegheny. Our school board will hire someone that is owed a favor.

CC, I don't think coaches like Palko or another established coach who has won a championship would come to Baldwin without a significant pay raise and job within the building. Coaches like Palko understand that you need to be in the school district and build relationships and expectations with the kids.

Fighting Highlander, I totally agree with you there. When Palko was hired for West Allegheny he was an after school coach, but the district seen how good he was with the kids and put a lot of time in with the team on and off the field. He was fair with all students who not only went out for football but other sports and and anyone who wanted to talk to him. He earned the respect of the students before he had a full time job at the district. He is one of the best roll models that a school can have. I just wish there was a clone of him to come to Baldwin.
