A Park for Maddox?

Frank Vallone of Highgrove Road has asked the Whitehall Borough Council to support a plan that would honor the memory of Maddox Derkosh, the 2-year-old Whitehall boy killed in a tragic mauling incident at the Pittsburgh Zoo on Nov. 4.

Vallone asked council members at their meeting on Wednesday night what would need to be done to name one of Whitehall's public parks after Maddox.

Council President William J. Veith told Vallone that the council is "looking at what options we have" regarding a tribute to Maddox. But for now, Veith said, the council wishes to respect a "grieving period" for his family.

Tax Refund for Whitehall Place

The owners of the Whitehall Place Apartments complex in the Wallace (Prospect) Park area are due $39,801.98 in real estate tax refunds from Whitehall Borough, borough Manager James E. Leventry said on Wednesday, due to their winning recent appeals of Allegheny County-assessed property values of Whitehall Place.

The total includes $5,887.33 from 2012 and $33,914.65 from 2011.

Whitehall Council Won't Help Resident Move Bus Stop

The Whitehall Council unofficially but unanimously agreed to not help a borough resident with his appeal to Port Authority of Allegheny County.

The resident—from the 4500 block of Brownsville Rd.—needed the approval of his municipal council to move forward on a request to have Port Authority move the bus stop from outside of his home to somewhere else.

The resident is unhappy with the amount of pedestrian traffic and trash both on and near his property as a believed result of the bus stop's presence there, but the council confirmed with Whitehall police Chief Donald R. Dolfi that there is no safety issue involved with the situation as is.

And Councilwoman Linda J. Book said that she's worried that no better option is available nearby for the bus stop, perhaps risking an altogether shutdown of the stop by Port Authority.

Councilman Glenn Nagy added that, by moving it, "You'd just be moving it to somebody else's property."

Leventry said that a Port Authority representative told him that seven or eight people per day use the stop in question.
